Boston College Baseball: Summer League Update

Lawn chairs and Louisville Sluggers are more essential than Aloe Vera gel

After the first month of the 2013 summer league season, Birdballers around New England are starting to settle into their non-Eagle uniforms. Some notes to this point:

Andrew Chin (Chatham Anglers, Cape Cod Baseball League)

Took a no decision last weekend against the Orleans Firebirds. Absorbed his worst outing of the year by throwing 5.2 innings and giving up four runs on seven hits (first runs allows on the year). Still struck out six while only walking two; on the season, Chin is turning into a bona fide middle of the rotation starter at Veterans Field. In three appearances (two starts), he's 2-0 with a 2.63 ERA in 13.2 IP.

Blake Butera (Chatham Anglers, Cape Cod Baseball League)

Struggled at the plate last week, going 2-for-13, after going 4-for-5 with 2 RBI an 8-5 win over Yarmouth-Dennis on 6/16. Subtracting the Y-D win, Butera is only 3-for-22 on the season while adjusting to wood bats. Has been spraying everything the opposite way, with the righty most often flying out to RF, according to his CCBL online spray chart.

Chris Shaw (New Bedford Bay Sox, New England Collegiate League)

Hitting consistently well, with base knocks in four of five games last week, including two-hit performance against Sanford on 6/17. Went 5-for-18 with 2 RBI, including a two-walk, one run scored performance in NB's only win of the week. Hitting .324 on the year with 10 RBI in 11 games. 1:1 K-to-BB ratio at the dish isn't bad considering he's only done both five times. Hitting to all fields consistenly, with power shots to alleys by pulling to right field.

Eric Stone (Newport Gulls, New England Collegiate League)

Two appearances in relief, allowing one hit over 2.1 IP in regular season play. Five strikeouts to just one walk. Combined with one exhibition appearance, has thrown 5.1 IP with 7 K to 2 BB. Allowed just two hits over his entire summer as of 6/24.

Nick Poore (Sanford Mainers, New England Collegiate League)

Five innings in his only appearance/start this summer, picking up the win in a 4-3 victory over the New Bedford Bay Sox. Did not allow a run, surrendered three hits, struck out two and faced four over the minimum.

Austin Solecitto (Baltimore Redbirds, Cal Ripken Summer League)

Threw 1 inning in relief against Alexandria Aces but picked up a loss. Is 0-2 in three appearances while giving up a 2.45 ERA. Has thrown 3.2 IP with one save to his credit, picked up on 6/15 against Silver Spring Takoma T-Bolts (0.2 IP in that game).
