Birdball is finding new, creative ways of losing. The Eagles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before surrendering 11 straight runs to the Minutemen, losing 11-6 to Massachusetts in the first round of the 23rd Annual Beanpot Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops Boston College to 6-26 overall.
"Junior starter RHP Matt Alvarez gave up two hits, three runs - all earned - four walks and fanned four in three innings. Freshman lefty Jesse Adams (0-1) pitched the fourth, allowed two hits, three runs - all earned - and walked two to take the loss. Junior LHP Steve Green - retired nine of the 10 batters he faced in the sixth through eighth, recording three Ks.
Sophomore Blake Butera tallied his second consecutive multi-hit day, going 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and a run. Freshman Logan Hoggarth led the Eagles with three RBIs.
LHP Evan Mackintosh (1-0) went three innings in relief to tally the win, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two. He did not give up a run to the Eagles. Starter LHP Conor LeBlanc pitched the first two innings, allowed four hits, four runs - three earned - three walks and struck out one."
Here's Gambino talking about the loss, the pitching staff walking batters and the play of Butera and Green (the angry chicken ball caps are the worst).
The Eagles next take on the N.C. State Wolfpack at home on Friday. Game is at 2:30 PM.
