Boston College Head Football Coach Bill O’Brien is quickly filling out his staff. After luring away recently hired Craig Fitzgerald from Florida to become the team’s new Strength & Conditioning Coach. O’Brien is set to bring in Will Lawing to be the Eagles new Offensive Coordinator.

The 38-year old Lawing has been with O’Brien for the past decade at every stop since his Penn State days. This past season, he was with the Patriots as the Tight Ends Coach. He started out his coaching career in earnest at Juniata College in 2009 before joining O’Brien’s staff as GA at Penn State in 2013. When O’Brien was hired by the Texans, Lawing followed suit and began a role as a Defensive Quality Control Coach for a number of years. In 2017, the former Tar Heel and North Carolina native became an Offensive assistant before being promoted to Tight Ends Coach there in 2019.

Soon after O’Brien was relieved in Houston in 2020, both men were brought onto Nick Saban’s staff, where Lawing as an Offensive Analyst for the next two seasons. Needless to say, Lawing is one of O’Brien’s right-hand men and just when they may have begun diverting paths, they’re reunited ready for a new challenge both with newfound responsibilities.

Lawing hails from North Carolina and joined the Tar Heels football team as a walk-on. He started out as a defensive back, but moved to wide receiver a few years in. Upon graduation in 2008, he began his coaching career at Juniata College in central Pennsylvania. He quickly became the passing game coordinator in 2010 and offensive coordinator the following year, so while far removed this won’t be his first time with the title.

It was unclear how many new coaches O’Brien was going to bring on to his new staff, but it’s safe to say O’Brien is looking for new blood. He may not be able to (or want to) turnover everyone for the sake of continuity and player familiarity, but this is a step in the right direction. The Eagles need new thinking all around, and O’Brien can’t do it alone. Now he has a lieutenant who is he clearly comfortable with — whether he’s the one calling plays time will tell.

The move likely means Steve Shimko and Rob Chudzinski will not maintain their former roles, and neither will Phil Matusz on the conditioning side. Fitzgerald also has known O’Brien since the Penn State days, and later worked with him at the Texans. However he has had multiple other stops including three seasons with the New York Giants, and on the college side Tennessee, Penn State, South Carolina, Harvard and Maryland.

The fallout from the Jeff Hafley departure has obviously taken up a lot of airspace this past week. Sandwiched in between all that and last night’s Beanpot, BC corner Elijah Jones took part in this year’s Senior Bowl and offensive lineman Christian Mahogany at the East West Shrine Game. The two college football all star games begin the ramp up to NFL Draft season, the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama and Shrine Bowl in Frisco, Texas.

Jones was a late addition to the Senior Bowl roster but boy did he continue to do himself some favors. Former NFL GM Randy Mueller commented about his poise, confidence, instinct really stood out over the week. He already has good length and speed, and that sort of limelight is going to encourage more pro personnel to go back and see what a bright spot he was on the Eagles defense. Other outlets noted the All-ACC first team defensive back as one who is shooting up draft boards after the week.

Maybe Hafley getting hired by the Packers could also lead to Jones receiving more looks — spelling good news for one Eagle at least. Now Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and Patriots defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington were coaching Jones’s American team. Titans pass game coordinator Charles London coached the offensive side of the ball for the team as well.

Mahogany displayed his pure strength and skills at the Shrine Bowl as well. We already know how great he is, but great seeing how much love he’s receiving. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler remarked on his power and consistent ability to move guys in drills. OL analyst Brandon Thorn had him as the top rated lineman at this year’s game.

Another First-Team All-ACC guy, Mahogany is going to be a great guard for any team. He was a three year starter with BC and excelled everywhere. He’s currently projected in the third round. Chicago Bears special teams coordinator coached Mahogany on the East team, while Cardinals pass game coordinator Drew Terrell and Dolphins assistant Kolby Smith were the team’s offensive coordinator and running backs coach, respectively.

Sometimes, you have to move back to go forward.

Unrelatedly, does anyone have eyes on Steve Addazio? (Pictured smiling down below)

I kid I kid. But the list of candidates to replace the newest cheese-head is not as lengthy as one would like because, well it’s February. Yes, Jeff Hafley has left the Eagles high and dry on this one. While Father Leahy won’t need to pay a buyout had Hafley been canned at the end of the season, the cycle has passed and many ideal candidates have found new homes. Lest they pull a Hafley, the short list is rather short. Let’s get in the game and throw some names out there.

Boston College Ties

Brian Flores; DC Minnesota Vikings

This would be electric. Flores did a great job coaching an undermanned Vikings defense. The BC alum has however, exclusively coached in the NFL. Despite having an ongoing lawsuit that might be cause for him being overlooked for HC interviews, this seems more like a pipe-dream for the Eagle faithful. His sights are probably set on another NFL head coaching gig, and returning to BC seems like it would be beneath him right now.

Al Washington; D-Line and Defensive Run Game Coordinator, Notre Dame

I’m a big Al guy. He played and already coached at BC under Addazio. He made a few stops since at top programs in Cincinnati, Michigan, and Ohio State, and now the defensive line coach at Notre Dame. He already has the support of our very own Will Blackmon (who should also be on staff). Washington may not have head coaching or coordinating experience, but he has coached both sides of the ball and has been around some top notch leaders. I don’t need someone to call plays, but galvanize the fans, coach players hard, and re-establish an identity. Al has that in him.

If Al is hired. Let’s roll
— Will Blackmon (@WillBlackmon) February 1, 2024

Don Brown; HC UMass

Dr. Blitz is right in state at UMass, his second time in charge of the program. He led BC’s defense to new heights in his few years here. He wouldn’t be at BC for the long term, but could help steady the ship.

Rob Chudzinski, BC Assistant Head Coach for Offense

I mean, he’s already been in the building since 2020. After a long stretch of NFL gigs since his last appearance in college, with Miami in the early 2000s, Chud would be an easy answer. This would be the maintain continuity play, and to me this would scream ‘lame duck’ candidate though.

Scot Loeffler; HC Bowling Green

Loeffler was BC’s OC from 2016-18, and has had some solid success leading Bowling Green since then. Back to back Quick Lane Bowl appearances (which he won for BC his first season coaching) and a win over Georgia Tech this year are solid feats. Maybe not the most inspired choice, but could be an option.

Regionally Affiliated Candidates

Dan Mullen

The former Mississippi State and Florida coach has been pretty clearly looking for a new coaching gig, but is currently doing his best on the commentary front (actually pretty good at it). The New Hampshire native was very much in the mix for the Syracuse gig most recently. It would be dipping our toes back in the Urban Meyer-verse, but hey those results were pretty solid and we had a brand. Read more here about why he seems like one of the likeliest candidates.

Liam Coen; Kentucky OC

A former UMass quarterback and Rhode Island native, Coen would be a solid candidate, but has some Hafley-like flags. After starting out primarily in college, he’s ping-ponged a bit with the NFL. He has flipped between the Rams and Kentucky for two stints apiece, most recently the Kentucky OC. He has also interviewed for some OC jobs, including the open Bucs one right now. If he wants to try his hands at head coach, this would likely be a stop gap.

Billy O’Brien; OC Ohio State

The Massachusetts native O’Brien has been around some of the game’s best and coached at a high level. As head coach post-Paterno at Penn State, head coach with the Houston Texans, multiple stints with the Patriots, and a stop at Alabama’s coaching rehabilitation program, O’Brien clearly has the resume. Now he’s been known to blow a fuse every now and then, but maybe that’s what we need. He took the OSU job under BC guy Ryan Day just about a week ago so it’s not exactly treachery. I’m sure he wants to get back to leading a team himself. He was reportedly in the mix for the BC gig last time as well. Come home, sweet prince. Read more about why he could be a good fit HERE.

Mike Vrabel

BC Dad Mike Vrabel is surprisingly out of a job with only one remaining NFL spot open. He coached at Ohio State for a few seasons as well, so we’re dipping back into that well. Unlikely again, but you know if he wants to why not. Ask Bill to join too.

Possible Defectors (we won’t hold it against you)

Bob Chesney; HC James Madison

A fan-favorite after an exceptional job at Holy Cross (including a close loss to BC this season), Chesney took over James Madison just a few months ago. It would probably be a bit of a red flag were he to jump ship so quick, but BC missed the window on this one. Thanks Jeff.

Other?

Jason Candle; HC Toledo

I am not familiar with his work, but everyone else is mentioning him so we have to acknowledge him. The Ohio native is a bright offensive mind who has gone to three straight bowl games. After an 11 win 2023 season, they lost in the Arizona bowl. Candle has been in charge since 2016 and was most recently in the mix for the Syracuse gig this offseason. His background includes work with Iowa State coach Matt Campbell at Mount Union and later Toledo. He’s not a splash and has shades of Jim Christian, but I like the offensive mind angle.

Whomever the case, BC needs to act fast. The Eagles lost very little in the portal, but now the whole roster has a new window to enter in<s> 30 </s>29 days time. Time is of the essence to re-recruit our own team.

Seriously though, where is Daz? Let us know your thoughts on BC’s next head coach.

Your Fenway Bowl champions begin their <s>title defense</s> new journey on Labor Day Monday against the defending ACC champions, Florida State (assuming they’re still into the association). They’ll be traveling down to Tallahassee for this one after a long stretch of home games (and many cupcakes) to start seasons past.

But hopefully the Seminoles will have released some of that pent up aggression from that whole being left out of the CFP squabble. While this will be BC’s first game of the season, FSU will begin their own title defense* in Ireland, partaking in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic against Georgia Tech.

Hafley has yet to beat the Seminoles, but came oh-so-close last season. BC is losers of five straight, and only have one win in the past 13 years. The last win down south came in 2008. There’s a whole lot of talent leaving FSU, and while they’ve certainly restocked, Hafley has been hunting in the portal himself to change the tides.

The Eagles return home to face FCS Duquesne before heading back on the road again to face Missouri. Mizzou is coming off a fantastic season capped off by a Cotton Bowl win over Ohio State. BC won the first leg of this series back in the great state of Massachusetts in 2021. There are two more non conference games on deck, with Michigan State and Western Kentucky at home.

Then conference play picks up in earnest. The Eagles head to the other commonwealth to face Virginia before a bye week prior to heading right back down. Not the best scheduling there, and it’s not a full break either (though Tech is in a similar situation making the flight to Stanford).

Along with the week 1 Monday night primetime opportunity, BC will have standalone slots for the ensuing game Thursday night in Week 8 (Oct 17th) at Virginia Tech and Friday night Week 9 back home for Louisville.

Fran Brown makes his first trip for Syracuse to Chestnut Hill in early November. BC will be coming off a proper bye week and change this time before a Texas road trip to face our new ACC brethren SMU. This time it’s personal.

The Eagles end the season with a pair of homes games against UNC and then Pittsburgh on Thanksgiving weekend.

Give us a way-too-early record prediction below! Which game are you looking forward to the most — either for fun or circling as a defining moment of the season (which could also be fun)? It might be Virginia Tech under the lights for me, and seeing that Spartan green at home will be a sight to behold.

Our soon to be ACC compatriots arrive to Boston ahead of schedule for the Fenway Bowl.

#24 SMU is surely a bit disappointed they didn’t make a more marquee bowl in a warmer location, but this will be a fun precursor for things to come. The Mustangs don’t have any major transfer notes, but BC does have a few folks having had to declare their intentions already. Here’s what to expect from Rhett Lashlee’s team looking for its 12th win of the season:

Pony Express

Kevin Jennings, 37/57, 427 yards, 4 TDs, 2 INTs, 91 yards rushing, 1 TD run

Preston Stone was the quarterback for much of SMU’s championship season but broke his leg in the regular season finale. So it’s redshirt freshman Kevin Jennings who will get the nod. Jennings started and won the AAC championship game, finishing with a stat line of 203 yards, 1 TD, and 2 interceptions. He also ran 15 times for 63 yards. He may have fumbled the first play of his first start, but he hung in and beat an excellent top-25 Tulane team. Jennings has seen action in a few games primarily because of some blowout victories. The fifth rank scoring offense is a bit different with him leading the way.

TE RJ Maryland: 34 rec., 518 yds, 7 TDs

Slot WR Jake Bailey: 36 rec., 474 yds

WR Romello Brinson: 26 rec., 417 yds, 2 TDs

WR Kelvontay Dixon: 24 rec., 420 yds, 4 TDs

WR Jordan Hudson: 28 rec., 412 yards, 7 TDs

WR Key’Shawn Smith: 23 catches, 380 yds, 3 TDs

It’s a very versatile group of receivers at his disposal. Maryland has been the leading receiving threat and was Jennings’s top target this past game. He has the size speed for mismatches, and is tied for a team-leading 7 touchdowns. He is a first team all conference selection along with three members of the offensive line. The senior slot Bailey was a favorite target for Stone, but his short area quickness can cause trouble. Brinson is a big 6-2 receiver on the outside while fellow junior Moochie Dixon plays a similar role. Hudson and Smith occupy the other receiving role. Smith caught the only touchdown Jennings through in the championship game.

Along with Jennings on the ground, this bevy of backs is led by Knighton. The senior is a former Miami hurricane with over 1000 yards at the school. He scored the team’s opening touchdown and finished with 75 yards against the Green Wave. It’s not the strongest rushing attack, but with Jennings leading the way, they’ll likely lean on the run. They’re not so much home-run hitters (except the BC defense can sort of make anyone at any time just that), but they all churn over 5 yards a carry. It’s a strong offensive line that is also top 20 in fewest sacks allowed too, only surrendering one with Jennings a few weeks ago. All have a handful of catches but aren’t targeted all too much as well.

Mustang Mayhem

MLB Kobe Wilson: 74 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT, 1 FF

The headline of this matchup is the SMU defensive front vs the BC offensive line. SMU is second in the country with 47 sacks. With the loss of their quarterback, the defense might be stepping it up even more. The defense is #3 in the country in third down defense and 12th in scoring and total defense. It’s been nothing short of near dominant. The junior Wilson is the tackling machine paired with Liberty transfer Walker. Then there’s Chatman whose disruptive presence inside earned him an all conference first team nod. It’s an overall veteran group who has been battle tested and taken massive strides while bringing in a few new faces. They avenged a 2022 conference championship loss, and held Tulane to 31 yards rushing and produced seven sacks. A pair of Miami transfers has helped the cause, with a potent pass rusher in Roberts and a run stuffer in Miller.

CB Charles Woods: 25 tackles, 11 passes defended

CB Christ Megginson: 21 tackles, 6 passes defended

SS Isaiah Nwokobia: 4 INTs, 1 sack, 58 tackles, 4.5 TFLs

With 11 interceptions in total, the secondary has taken four to the house. They in fact lead the country in defensive touchdowns. Sophomore Nwokobia has been an absolute ball hawk. A handful of transfers are in this secondary as well. Megginson and Woods hold the outside corner spots by way of Liberty and West Virginia. McGill was a strong performer at Stanford. With Ryan O’Keefe officially medically retiring from the game, and Jaden Williams entering the transfer portal, BC will have a little less depth to work with. Dino Tomlin and Jaden Skeete figure to get much more involved.

Special

K Collin Rogers

Rogers was very busy in the championship game, scoring the final 12 points of the game. He hit from 48, 45, and 32 twice in the game, but also missed once from 40. Conditions were mucky in that one so the currently projected rainy forecast will be slightly less of an issue. On the season he has missed 1 XP and 6 field goals

The Harlem native has had a solid career at BC, showing improvement each season. He started his first three games in Steve Addazio’s final season, and only grew from there. By his redshirt junior year in 2021 he was starting nearly every game leading to an All-ACC Honorable mention in 2022. This year was his most productive, logging game-changing and some clinching interceptions. Before he was announced out for the season due to a personal issue, Jones was doing his best to hold together a young secondary. After one of his two dual interception games, Hafley was heard lauding his accomplishments and how he has entered the discussion as a second or third day pick in the draft. The Eagles would not win another game without him. Even without those last few games, his season culminated in a First Team All-ACC selection. He finishes his collegiate career with 7 interceptions, 36 passes defended, and 156 tackles.

In transfer portal news, defensive back and redshirt freshman CJ Clinkscales announced his intention to transfer. Clinkscales started 4 games. Earlier this week, junior receiver Jaden Williams entered. And of course as expected quarterback Emmett Morehead will be taking his talents elsewhere.

Best of luck to all! Hafley and co are making noise in the portal themselves with such a small recruiting class coming into the fray. In his current seat, Hafley needs to have guys be immediate contributors and so the portal is the answer.

All-ACC teams were announced today and seven Eagles found their names on the three teams and the honorable mention group, including nearly the entire offensive line as deserved.

First Team

OL Christian Mahogany

DB Elijah Jones

No surprise with these two. Mahogany was steadfast all season long as part of the best unit on this Boston College team. A projected top round pick in the upcoming draft, Mahogany

Elijah Jones led the team with five interceptions in his nine games played most critically in the win over Georgia Tech. Jones nabbed two interceptions in that one as well as two later against Syracuse. Jones has been suspiciously absent for the past three games (all losses for BC) and is considered out for the season, but still finds his way on this list for his ball hawking. He also is credited with five passes defended and a forced fumble.

Second Team

OL Ozzy Trapilo

Third Team

LB Vinny DePalma

The elder statesman of the team, DePalma has logged a lot of miles at BC. He ended this season leading the team in tackles (87) once again, 1 TFL, 0.5 Sacks, and a fumble recovery.

Honorable Mention

OL Logan Taylor

OL Kyle Hergel

DT Cam Horsley

In their first seasons on the Heights, the two lineman did good work helping produce a strong rushing offense. Horsley was praised by Hafley a few weeks ago for his unheralded play. The senior finished the season with 38 tackles and got his hands up for 3 blocked passes. Kudos to Cam doing his best on the inside.

Notable Misses

It’s unfortunate QB Thomas Castellanos couldn’t find his way onto a team, but there was some solid quarterback play in the conference. After finishing second in the nation in yards (957) rushed for a quarterbacks. Center Drew Kendall was also part of a strong offensive line, but the redshirt sophomore did not make it this season after a Freshman All American season. After missing two games, RB Kye Robichaux finished just a tad short of the folks that made the teams, but still a strong year from him finishing with 691 yards, 4.6 yards per carry.

Congratulations to all.

A stellar opening drive was about all she wrote for Boston College in this one. Thomas Castellanos did his usual thing, and the Eagles offense played all the right notes to allow Kye Robichaux to fly over the line for the first core of the game. But it was all Miami from there on out.

Tyler Van Dyke and the offense tied up the score despite a shaky first possession. Miami would convert multiple third downs including one by way of penalty. The Eagles defense simply could not cover, get off the field, or get out of their own way.

Those early jitters would quickly subside and things really started to click for the Hurricanes. Van Dyke would have time to find his receivers open deep down the field consistently. Main man Xavier Restrepo would lead the way with six catches for 117 yards including two huge fourth down catches in BC territory. He was not to be completely outshined by Jacolby George, who caught six passes for 89 yards and a late third quarter touchdown. On the ground, Miami running back Hunter Parrish Jr. would score twice in the first half. Early in the second quarter, he ran one in from 15 yards out, and later capped off the half with a short punch in.

Boston College’s offense by contrast would see it’s four remaining possessions in the half pretty much stall out in mere moments. Kye Robichaux was said to be under the weather coming into the game. He got the first score, but really did not get much work. It was Castellanos trying to do it all once again. He again ran for well over 100 yards, but could not find anything going in the passing game or string together successful plays. By halftime, the game would prove to be out of reach with Miami leading the way 28-7 after a Hail Mary attempt was possibly picked off — it’s still rather unclear and unimportant.

The second half brought the slightest sliver of hope. BC lineman Gilbert Tongrongou got on top of a shaky handoff, and Castellanos went back to work. He ran in from 21 yards out a few plays later to make it a two possession game.

But Miami would answer as they do. Parrish easily ran down the field for 38 yards, and George would catch his score at the goal line faking motion inside. Another BC punt, and Miami kept on rolling. The defense did hold them to a field goal which the special teams unit was able to block, but the tides simply would not turn for good. Castellanos was picked off moments later and the Hurricanes would find their field goal one way or another.

Late garbage time saw Castellanos connect deep down the field with Jaedn Skeete and then cap it off with a floater to Lewis Bond. Though even while running down the clock, Mario Cristobal’s team would score once more from 30 yards out to extend the lead further. Castellanos would ice the game with yet another interception as well.

BC finishes it’s regular season 6-6 on a three game losing streak. They’ll need a lot of work to prepare for their bowl game and end the season on the positive. It will be the first bowl game of the Jeff Hafley era (though I should not speak so soon).

The feasts are over and now we can celebrate the BC seniors in the last game of the regular season and their final home games as Eagles. Two 6-5 teams already bowl eligible square off for perhaps a slightly better bowl game. Miami is a big favorite on the road, but are riding a three game losing streak. Meanwhile, BC after a strong five game winning streak, have dropped two straight of their own. Both teams will hope to finish positively as they shift their focus to bowl season.

It’s the regular season finale this Friday. The Hurricanes (6-5, 2-5 ACC) come to town on a three game losing streak, falling to top-10 teams in FSU and Louisville. Boston College, of course, is riding it’s own losing streak into their home finale, so both teams will look to end the regular season on a high note as they head into bowl preparations.

Passing Attack

Passing Yards: 196/297, 2,413 yards, 17 TDs, 12 INTs

It’s been a roller coaster season (and collegiate career) for Tyler Van Dyke. He was benched in the game against Florida State only to return after a season-ending injury to freshman Emory Williams. He’ll be at the helm this week. The veteran has been a turnover machine, but can certainly sling it.

Running Back . . . JUNIORS

Mark Fletcher Jr. 91 carries 468 yards, 4 TDs

Henry Parrish Jr. 78 carries 468 yards, 4 TDs

Donald Chaney Jr. 91 carries, 467 yards, 2 TDs

Brashard Smith, 9 carries, 132 yards, 1 TD, 22 receptions, 263 passing yards, 2 TDs

No, they’re not all juniors, but the Miami running back committee all have unbelievable similar stat lines and happen to have Jr. as a suffix. The freshman Fletcher is a power runner who has been leaned on more recently. The early season starter Parrish has been a bit banged up of late, but did log a few carries coming back last week. And then there’s a shifty Chaney who ended up shining in the FSU game running 7.1 yards a carry.-

Smith is a wide receiver, but the way they’ve gotten him the ball warranted separating him out a bit. Last week he ran from the wildcat, shows how much of a dynamic playmaker he is. Van Dyke isn’t much of a runner, but can certainly scramble for some chain-moving yards.

Receiving Mix

Xavier Restrepo: 68 catches, 876 yards, 5 TDs

Jacolby George: 49 catches, 762 yards, 7 TDs

Colbie Young: 44 catches, 529 yards, 4 TDs

Restrepo has a great rapport with Van Dyke. He’s a smaller receiver that makes tough plays all over the field, primarily operating out of the slot. He’s quick across the middle and has returned punts as well. He’s been one of the highest rated receivers in the conference, and after a short quiet stretch is now off an 8 catch, 193 performance against Louisville. Young is the big-bodied option on the outside. George has been a field-stretching vertical threat. This is a nice complement of receiving for the Hurricanes air-raid offense.

One other note is that tight end Elijah Arroyo is set to return this week. Coach Mario Cristobal described him as one of the team’s best and most dynamic players and a team leader. He’s been through a few injuries, but came on strong in his 2021 debut season. He’s a big target a 6-4 target that they’re going to look forward to getting back.

On the offensive line front, the team has only allowed 14 sacks on the season, top 25 in the country. They have talent and improving, but all in all above average. Along with Van Dyke’s interceptions, the offense has lost seven fumbles putting them at 20 turnovers for the year, putting their strong defense in quite the bind. . .

Defensive Stats Leaders

LB Francisco Mauigoa: 61 tackles, 15 TFLs, 6.5 sackks, 1 INT, 2 forced fumbles

DE Rueben Bain Jr: 35 tackles, 8.5 TFLS, 6.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles

SS James Williams: 69 tackles, 1 INT, 4 passes defensed

FS Kamren Kinchens 57 tackles, 1 sack, 5 INTs

Mario Cristobal’s team has been one of the better defenses in the country, last week aside. They are allowing 326 yards per game

In particular, the Hurricanes have had one of the best rushing defenses in the country, allowing under 100 yards per game, and 3 yards per carry.

The freshman Bain has been a star on the defensive line. The pass rush struggled last week, but largely been a force. They are up their in TFLs, total sacks, pressure rate.

They have been below average in pass defense however. Just last weekend, two defensive backs collided only to let Louisville score on a long play. The Safety Kinchens did earn All-America honors last year and has been a ball hawk this season.
