Here we go!

Happy Beanpot eve, everyone! We’ve got a huge matchup on deck, as the Eagles take on the Terriers in the first round of the 71st Beanpot. The Eagles are coming off a 6-1 steamrolling of UMass-Lowell on Friday, seeing five different players land on the scoresheet. On a five game win streak, the Eagles look to make it six and take their first trip to the Beanpot Championship since 2019.

By the time Monday rolls around, it’ll only have been nine days since BC took on BU last. In case you missed it (but how could you, really?), the Eagles swept the Terriers in their home-and-home series, clinching the top ranking in the nation and dropping the Terriers to 3rd while also handing them their first losses since Thanksgiving. Despite winning both games in different ways, the Eagles will still have their work cut out for them as the Terriers are bound to enter this game extra fired up.

After being swept, the Terriers dropped a game in overtime to Northeastern, before rebounding against UNH last weekend. Macklin Celebrini and Lane Hutson still lead the team on offense, and goalie Mathieu Caron is at a .912 save percentage.

Like I said last time these two teams played, nothing on paper matters when these two teams take the ice. Both teams have experience under the bright lights, and excited fan bases ready to see them square off (though, in my totally unbiased opinion, the BC students lit Conte up in a way that BU fans at Agganis could never match up to).

After an incredible weekend for the Eagles that saw them sweep the Terriers and take over the top spot in the country, they’ll be traveling up to Lowell to take on the Riverhawks for one game. BC will be looking to add to their four game win streak and head to Monday’s Beanpot semifinal on a high note.

The Riverhawks have not been having a great season since the Eagles swept their home-and-home series back in November. Since that weekend, Lowell has gone 3-12-2, earning wins against Merrimack, Vermont, and Harvard. Coming off a pair of Hockey East losses to Providence, the Riverhawks will be looking to right the ship against BC this weekend.

On offense, the Riverhawks are still led by Owen Cole and Scout Truman, who each have 16 points in 25 games. When we last checked in on them, goalies Henry Welsch and Luke Pavicich had almost identical stats, with a .946 save percentage and a sub-2.00 GAA. Welsch has had a stronger season since November with a .920 save percentage, while Pavicich seems to have struggled and has a .881. They look to still be splitting starts, but it’s likely that the Eagles will face Welsch in net on Friday.

Regardless of how the Riverhawks’ season has gone since we last saw them, Lowell is always a tough arena to play at, and the Eagles will have to make sure to bring their A-game, despite the big game looming on Monday.

A Battle of Comm Ave like no other!

Well, well, well — here we are. I really don’t know what else I can say about this game that hasn’t already been said, honestly. It’s the first time ever (!) that the Eagles and the Terriers are matching up as the top two teams in the country, and have the exact same record (with the Terriers having a slight edge in Hockey East play). This weekend is definitely bound to be an unreal experience for players and fans alike, so let’s get into it.

The Terriers started at the top of the polls before the season began, but had a rougher start to the year than some imagined. They’ve gotten themselves back on track though, not having dropped a single game since the beginning of December. The games they have lost this year have been against other top-20 teams, so they’ve been cleaning up when they have to.

Freshman Macklin Celebrini and sophomore defenseman Lane Hutson lead the Terriers in scoring, with 32 points and 28 points in 19 games respectively. Both are considered two of the best players in college hockey this year, so the Eagles will have their work cut out for them when it comes to shutting them down. The Terriers also have scoring depth, with nine players who all have double-digit points so far this season. In net, Brown transfer Mathieu Caron has a .918 save percentage and a 2.33 GAA.

If there’s one thing BC-BU matchups have taught us in the past though, it’s that nothing on paper matters. Whether it’s Celebrini and Hutson on the Terriers’ side or Gabe Perreault, Will Smith, Ryan Leonard, Cutter Gauthier, Oskar Jellvik, Jacob Fowler, et al on the Eagles’ side, there is really no predicting how this weekend will go — other than both Conte Forum and Agganis Arena will be rocking. With the Eagles seemingly set to reveal a new sweater on Friday, the vibes are good.

Not much has changed for the Friars since the last time the Eagles saw them back in December! They played one game at the end of 2023, winning 3-0 against Brown, and then also took on Simon Fraser in an exhibition game last weekend, winning 5-2.

In their previous matchup, the Eagles blew a two goal lead in the third period, only to roar back and prevent a collapse and take the game 5-4 in regulation. Will Smith and Gabe Perreault scored the first two goals, while Cutter Gauthier scored the game tying goal after the Friars took the lead in the middle of the third. Oskar Jellvik scored the last two goals of the game to keep the Eagles on top. It was a pretty solid effort minus the blown lead, the Eagles essentially deciding that they were not going to take an L that night.

On the Friars offense, senior Nick Poisson now leads the team with 15 points in 17 games. Second leading scorer Jaroslav Chmelar had wrist surgery at the end of 2023, and looks to be out for a better part of this half of the year – so it’s likely the Eagles will not be seeing him in the lineup this weekend. In net, Philip Svedebäck has played in all 17 games and has a .911 save percentage with a 2.01 GAA.

It should be a close game, as most Eagles-Friars matchups are. As always, go Eags!

Gold medals are coming back to the Heights

Seven members of the Boston College men’s hockey team won gold at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championships on Friday night, as the United States defeated Sweden in a 6-2 rout. The last time the United States won gold at World Juniors was in 2021, when three Eagles — Spencer Knight, Matt Boldy, and Drew Helleson — were on the roster.

Freshmen Will Smith, Ryan Leonard, Gabe Perreault, Drew Fortescue, Jacob Fowler, & Aram Minnetian, and sophomore Cutter Gauthier were all named to the US National Junior Team in December, setting a USA Hockey record with seven players named to the roster from the same school.

In the gold medal game, Perreault started off the scoring towards the end of the first off a sweet pass from Smith (sound familiar?), sending the US into the intermission with the lead.

Northeastern’s been having a bit of a tough start to their season, going 3-7-1 in their first 11 games and 0-7-0 in Hockey East play. Entering this matchup, however, the Huskies offense exploded for a 9-2 win against RPI last Sunday — after a seven game stretch in which the Huskies offense couldn’t score more than 2 goals and were wracked with injuries. Northeastern always brings their A-game against BC and are coming into this weekend on a high note, so this should be a good series.

On offense, the Huskies are led by senior Alex Campbell, who has 11 points in 11 games and sophomore Cam Lund who has 10 points in 11 games. Four players — Justin Hryckowian, Campbell, Jack Williams, and Hunter McDonald — are scoring at a point per game or more. In net, freshman Cameron Whitehead looks to be stepping into Devon Levi’s shoes as the starter, and has a .898 save percentage and a 2.79 GAA in 10 games.

As always, go Eags!

It was all underclassmen tonight!

Boston College obliterated Notre Dame tonight, winning 6-1 in South Bend in front of a sold out crowd.

The Eagles got the scoring started early in the game, when Ryan Leonard beat Notre Dame goalie Ryan Bischel with an absolute laser of a shot after an unreal pass from Gabe Perreault. Fowler had some big stops on a penalty kill late in the first — and just as the Fighting Irish were gaining some momentum, Leonard scored his second goal of the game after some pretty passing from the freshman line to put the Eagles up 2-0.

The second period was eventful, to say the least. After killing off a penalty to start the period and a bit of back and forth, Drew Fortescue scored the Eagles’ third goal to put BC up 3-0. Oskar Jellvik was taken down on a 1-on-1 chance and left the ice while Notre Dame was penalized — and on that penalty, a ND player took Leonard down (who also left the ice and went straight to the locker room) to put the Eagles on a 5-on-3 power play. Gabe Perreault scored on the 5-on-3, putting the Eagles up 4-0. Jellvik later returned to the ice and earned his revenge and scored to make it 5-0 after a sweet pass from Aidan Hreschuk. Play in the second ended on a 4-on-4, but neither team was able to capitalize before the buzzer.

BC started the third period with a power play, as the same Notre Dame player who injured Jellvik leveled Andre Gasseau from behind. Fortunately Gasseau wasn’t injured, but the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the power play. He was able to enact his own revenge a few minutes later though, as he scored off a beautiful pass from Jellvik to put the Eags up 6-0. Unfortunately with 1:35 left in the game, Notre Dame was able to break Jacob Fowler’s shutout bid to make it 6-1. The Eagles finished the game on the penalty kill, but were able to hold the Irish off the board to preserve the 6-1 final.

The Fighting Irish are 7-4-2 to start the season, and are currently third in the Big Ten standings. Other than splitting two shootouts with Penn State, Notre Dame has lost games to RIT, Clarkson, BU, and Minnesota, earning splits with everyone but the Tigers.

On offense, senior Landon Slaggert leads the Fighting Irish with 13 points in 13 games, followed by freshman Danny Nelson who has 11 points in 13 games. In net, grad student Ryan Bischel has started all three games and has a .936 save percentage with a 2.08 GAA.

HARVARD PREVIEW:

The Crimson have only played 5 games this year, but are 1-1-3, earning their only win against #16/17 Cornell two weekends ago.

Four players are tied for the team lead in scoring, with freshman Ben MacDonald and sophomores Joe Miller, Ryan Healey, and Philip Tresca each having four points in five games. Sophomore Aku Koskenvuo and senior Derek Mullahy look to be splitting starts, with Koskenvuo having a slightly better save percentage of .919 while Mullahy is sporting a .906.

Both games will be good tests for BC, as they wrap up their non conference slate for this half of the season. Go Eagles!

PREVIEW:

The Huskies are having a fairly up-and-down start to their season, their record hovering just under .500. So far, they’ve earned splits in almost every series that they’ve played with the exception of being swept by Holy Cross back in October. On offense, they’re led by sophomore Matthew Wood, who has 10 points in 12 games, followed by senior Hudson Schandor with 8 points.

Of note — goalie Logan Terness, who stoned the Eagles a bunch of times last season and the season prior, looks to have transferred to Ohio State after a solid sophomore year. In net this season for the Huskies, grad student & Clarkson transfer Ethan Haider and sophomore Arsenii Sergeev look to be splitting starts. Haider has a .929 save percentage and a 1.88 GAA, while Sergeev has a .897 save percentage and a 2.82 GAA. It’s likely that the Eagles will face Haider this weekend, though there’s always a possibility each goalie starts one.

In November so far, the Huskies have split against Vermont and Merrimack, losing the first game before rebounding to win the second one, so I’m curious to see how they come out against the Eagles at Conte to start the first game of the series. UConn has won four of the last five match ups against the Eagles — in three games last season, the Eagles were only able to win on Senior Night before dropping their last regular season game of the year at UConn.

The Eagles will look to get back in the win column this weekend and hopefully go for the sweep.
