On senior day, the seniors got things going and the Eagles cruised to victory at home over Wake Forest. John Cain Carney capped his career with his first 3-pointer.

Heading into the game against Wake Forest, the Eagles could not help or hurt their ACC Tournament seeds. BC was going to play Georgia Tech on Tuesday after Virginia Tech's earlier loss to Miami. However, the lack of motivation to win today did not stop Boston College from taking care of business against Wake Forest in what was the final home game for 7 BC players. Patrick Heckmann, Dmitri Batten, Aaron Brown, Eddie Odio, and Alex Dragevich all got the start today in their final home game while senior John Cain Carney came off the bench. Eddie Odio and John Cain Carney both got it going from beyond the arc in unusual ways for them as John Cain Carney hit his first 3-pointer and Odio added 2. It all wrapped up with a Boston College 79-61 victory, giving the Eagles the 3rd longest winning streak in the ACC heading into the tournament if Virginia and Duke win later tonight.

Olivier Hanlan, of course, got his points even though he came off the bench in this one, finishing with 19. The theme lately though during the 3 game winning streak continued with 4 Eagles scoring in double digits. Patrick Heckmann had 14, Aaron Brown 13, and Dmitri Batten had 10, including an exciting dunk towards the end of the game. Eight Boston College players scored in all, which was good to see, but it was surprising that Dennis Clifford did not score. He did grab 7 rebounds coming off the bench and played fewer minutes than normal being senior day and the game being easily in hand later on.

Boston College will now play Georgia Tech Tuesday in the ACC Tournament 1:00 Wednesday for the opportunity to play either Louisville or UNC on Wednesday depending on how the rest of today's action plays out. As a BC fan, you have to hope that UNC beats Duke and gets into the 4 seed, leaving Louisville, who has been reeling, for BC—should they get past Georgia Tech. That game will be 2:00 Wednesday. Georgia Tech is the only ACC team not in action this weekend so they will be a little more rested than the rest of the programs headed to Greensboro. Given BC's short bench, this could factor in Tuesday but BC has already beaten Georgia Tech in Atlanta once this season and BC has been playing very well the last two weeks. The only chance BC has at any postseason play is winning the ACC Tournament.

Make it two in a row for the Eagles as the Eagles get a large lead and hold on to win in Blacksburg.

The key to winning Saturday against NC State was that Olivier Hanlan got a lot of help. Tonight it was Dmitri Batten who came in as the Eagles' leading scorer for the first time all season to help Boston College to their second straight ACC victory. Boston College got only their 3rd conference win of the season Monday night and won back-to-back conference games for the first time all season, beating the Hokies 66-59.

On Saturday, NC State seemed to be hungover from their emotional victory at UNC. Tonight perhaps Virginia Tech was still hungover from their emotional overtime loss to Duke and loss to in-state rival Virginia.

Early on in the game at Cassell Coliseum, it was Patrick Heckmann finding Aaron Brown and Olivier Hanlan on back door cuts to get BC some points on the board and loosen up the Virginia Tech defense. After the Hokies got burned a few times for being overly aggressive on D, scoring came a little easier the rest of the way for the Eagles. Heckmann lead the team in assists again with 4, but unfortunately had as many turnovers.

Boston College was in control for much of the first half and then was able to extend their lead to as many as 22 in the second half. But then it almost got real interesting late as Virginia Tech cut the lead to 6 with 2 minutes left, followed by a quick Aaron Brown turnover. Adam Smith missed a 3 from the corner, which could have changed the outcome of the game. From there Virginia Tech started fouling and never got it any closer than a 6 point margin.

Dennis Clifford looked good at times during the game but got called for traveling twice in the post in the second half. Clifford still had a solid game overall, finishing with almost a double double grabbing 9 boards and scoring 11 points.

Olivier Hanlan and Aaron Brown both finished in double digits as per usual. Hanlan's 15 points was below his typical production lately as he shot 1 of 7 from beyond the arc, but fortunately no more was needed for his team to come away victorious.

BC now has Wake Forest coming up this weekend—a winnable game that could give the Eagles three consecutive wins going into the ACC Tournament. But even with that win, BC will finish the season having only beaten one ACC team that will not play on the first day of the ACC Tournament (N.C. State).

Boston College leads wire to wire to get first ACC home win of the season and get NC State back into tournament bubble talk.

BC wins!!

Boston College got off to a good start against NC State opening up at 11-2 behind 2 Dimitri Batten 3-pointers. NC State called a timeout and managed to go on a run of their own to cut the 9 point BC lead to 2. At this point it seemed like we were about to witness another BC basketball game where fans were given some hope but it would eventually lead to the opposing team taking over later in the game. Surprisingly though, that did not happen at all. BC would never let the game get that close again and would go on to winning a game in which they never trailed.

Aaron Brown finished the first half converting an and-1 play to give the Eagles a 17 point lead at the half. This exciting play as time was expiring gave BC players and fans confidence heading into the intermission which they then carried into the second half and brought to a win. The well-played first half was highlighted by Patrick Heckmann's 7 assists.

There are certain things that need to happen for Boston College to pull an upset in ACC play from here on out. Fortunately those things came true today and BC got their first home ACC win of the season! Here's how they did it.

Shoot over 40% from 3: check. BC shot 7-15 for 46.7% from beyond the arc with Hanlan and Batten hitting 5 of 7 combined.

Get at least 6 players involved in the scoring: check. All starters and Garland Owens scored at least 4 points in the first half and all starters finished in double digits for the first time this season. Dennis Clifford had 10, Dmitri Batten had 11, Aaron Brown had 13, Patrick Heckmann had 14, and Olivier Hanlan had 24.

The opponent cannot play their best: check. After upsetting UNC at the Dean Dome in their last outing by holding UNC to their fewest points scored ever in that building, NC State did not play with anywhere near the same defensive intensity against BC. Mark Gottfried was frustrated with his team's effort and substituted the entire lineup 3 minutes into the second half in order to get some more effort out of his team.

Olivier Hanlan had another big game with 24 points and finished with a game high 8 rebounds. Had it been a close game, the ball probably would have been in his hands more down the stretch and he would have gotten into the 30s again. However, his 24 was plenty to get BC the win and Hanlan was able to draw 6 fouls on NC State players in the first half alone.

This win won't mean much for ACC Tournament seeding as BC is still likely to wear an away jersey during the Tuesday session. BC has two more games left, but can change that as they will play two opponents also likely to be playing Tuesday: Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Finishing the season with 4 ACC wins is still very possible but that would not get BC out of playing Tuesday.

Next up: @Virginia Tech Monday at 9:00pm.

Boston College kept it close for a while but Syracuse built a large lead late to go on to win by 14.

The Eagles fell to Syracuse tonight at Conte Forum with a final score of 70-56. BC started out shooting well and took an early lead on Syracuse, where they made their first three 3-point attempts. Aaron Brown started off hot, hitting his first two, and Olivier Hanlan hit his first, but the Eagles lost their early lead on a Michael Gbinije layup that put Syracuse up 12-11 with 11:32 to play in the first half. From that point on the Eagles trailed the rest of the game.

The game was not a blowout by any means, as the largest lead for Syracuse came with 3:38 to play when they lead by 17.

There were stretches of the game where BC looked really bad or Syracuse looked really good, depending on how you want to look at it. For example, check the Syracuse play by play for a 3 minute stretch starting with 8:30 to play in the game.

Michael Gbinije made dunk. Assisted by Kaleb Joseph.
Kaleb Joseph made dunk.
Michael Gbinije missed jumper. Michael Gbinije offensive rebound. Michael Gbinije made layup.
Trevor Cooney made two free throws.
Rakeem Christmas steal. Kaleb Joseph made dunk.

It's sections of the game tonight like this that deflate fans and lead Boston College to a 1-10 ACC conference record. During that 3-minute stretch, the Syracuse lead only went from 6 points to 10 points, but the Syracuse lead grew after that. The possibility of a comeback seemed to leave Conte Forum with the momentum clearly shifting dramatically over to Syracuse.

Aaron Brown was the Eagles' leading scorer tonight with 19, followed by Olivier Hanlan with 16. Jim Christian played 10 players tonight as Will Magarity got back into the mix after missing 2 games with a concussion, but he only saw 6 minutes of action so it is doubtful that Christian felt he was 100%. Alex Dragicevich, who you may remember as the Notre Dame transfer that was often referred to as the best player in practice by those who were either close to the rumor mill or watching BC practices during the 2012-13 season, managed to get on the court tonight for 2 minutes of action. On a positive note though, BC shot 100% from the free throw line on 8 attempts.

Four of five BC starters, including Dennis Clifford, played more than 30 minutes. It is encouraging to see that Clifford was able to go for more than 30, but BC's late game fatigue seems to be getting worse as the season goes on and it is a shame that the starters did not get more rest in what resulted in a 14-point loss.

BC played well in the first half, but UNC controlled the second half en route to the victory.

Boston College played very well in the first half, holding a lead for most of it and never allowing a UNC lead of more than 3. In the first half Olivier Hanlan lead all scorers with 15 points and he drew several personal fouls on UNC with dribble penetration. The half ended with UNC and BC tied at 36. North Carolina clearly had more talent than BC on the inside with Clifford being outmuscled continuously and Eddie Odio being the primary help off the bench. John Cain Carney also got minutes; Will Magarity or even KC Caudill would have helped against the UNC bigs, but both were on the bench in suits dealing with injuries. Magarity is dealing with a concusion so his return is uncertain.

The second half was not as well-played by BC as fatigue set in and UNC controlled the game around the basket.

Foul trouble for UNC certainly played a factor in the second half. Nate Britt picked up his fourth foul with 13:17 to play, sending Dmitri Batten to the line for 3 shots. However, Batten only hit one of three free throws and UNC dominated BC from the free throw line at that point in the game. For the game though, UNC eventually got very cold from the line and BC improved so that for the game UNC shot 20 for 27 compared to BC's 13 for 19.

In a key spot with with 10 minutes to play, UNC stretched their lead to 14 points but Hanlan and Heckmann hit back-to-back 3's, sandwiching a UNC field goal to cut the lead to 10 and prevent the game from getting out of reach. Then BC trailed by 7 at the 4 minute timeout with the ball where a Clifford dunk cut the lead to 5. However, 5 would prove to be the closest BC would cut the lead to and they would lose by 11 after BC missed all their 3-point attempts in the last 5 minutes of the game.

After scoring a season-high 28 against Notre Dame, Hanlan set a new season-high with 30. Hanlan's ability to dribble penetrate and get to the line played a huge factor in Boston College having a chance to win the game against the Tarheels. Hanlan finished 8-9 from the free throw line and 10-20 from the field. Aaron Brown was the second leading scorer as per usual with 18, and no other Eagles finished in double digits. BC only went 8 deep and the bench only scored 4 points, compared to UNC going 10 players deep despite dealing with injuries of their own, and their bench scored 13 points.

Because of BC's inability to stop UNC inside, UNC only attempted 5 3-point shots. Marcus Paige's ACC record streak of 13 straight games with multiple 3's made came to an end as he only hit one. At least BC did not become part of the record books in that respect.

Next up for the Eagles: Syracuse at home Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

The Irish dominated the Eagles in the first half but then the Eagles made a strong comeback late in the second half behind's Olivier Hanlan's season high 28 points.

Boston College went down big early.

With 14:47 left to play in the first half, Notre Dame opened up a double digit lead. Notre Dame then stretched that lead out to 25 with five minutes left to play in the first half. Suddenly, with 3 minutes left to play in the game, Olivier Hanlan hit a 3 to cut the lead to 8. Olivier Hanlan then hit another 3 on the next possession for BC to cut it to six after Notre Dame hit one of two from the line. Notre Dame answered with a 3, but Hanlan once again answered with his third consecutive 3 to keep the Notre Dame lead at 6 with 1:45 to go. After a stop, Heckmann missed a 3 that could have cut it to 3. Demetrius Jackson and Aaron Brown then exchanged buckets to keep the lead at 6. Aaron Brown's layup ended 14 straight points for BC being scored by Olivier Hanlan. Pat Connaughton then hit the first free throw for Notre Dame but missed the second, giving BC a chance. However, Demetrius Jackson grabbed the offensive rebound putting an end to the Boston College comeback. Boston College lost to Notre Dame 71-63.

The first half was very forgettable for the Eagles except for a half court shot that Dimitri Batten threw in as time expired to end the half.

Olivier Hanlan had a great game scoring, going 11-16 from the field and 6 of 9 from 3. He also added 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals. In the second half, Hanlan got hot and looked like he could carry the Eagles to victory over anyone remaining on the schedule if he can sustain that level of play. Aaron Brown was the second leading scorer as usual with 13 but then they did not get much help after that.

Dennis Clifford played the most minutes he has played in a few weeks and looked good for most of the time he was on the floor, grabbing 7 boards and scoring 6 points. Patrick Heckmann struggled on the night though, finishing with 3 points on 1-7 shooting. Had a third player stepped up and helped out with some scoring, the Eagles might have had a chance to pull off the upset against #10 Notre Dame given Olivier Hanlan's hot shooting tonight.

Notre Dame's Jerian Grant did not have a great night by his very high standards and finished with 17 points. Zach Auguste, Steve Vasturia, and Pat Connaughton also finished with double digit scoring for the Irish. The Notre Dame defense did relax some when they had a large lead to allow BC to get the comeback started, but in the second half it seemed that the teams were both fairly evenly matched—which should be encouraging, or another one of those moral victories for BC and their fans.

Next up for the Eagles is North Carolina at home who have lost two straight games to Louisville and Virginia.

Boston College headed to Clemson today for what figured to be a winnable game but Clemson controlled the first ten minutes of the game and quickly put that idea to rest.

Never had a chance. This game was the exact opposite of the Boston College loss to Louisville this week as Clemson got the game under their control in the first ten minutes. Boston College was only able to get the deficit to single digits for a few seconds in the second half.

Jordan Roper for Clemson went for a career-high 24 points including scoring all of the Tigers' first 8 points. He finished 6 of 8 from 3-pt land. Roper was followed in scoring by Jaron Blossomgame, who scored 16. Clemson had 9 different players score, compared to 6 for the Eagles. Clemson also shot 13-14 from the line compared to 5-9 for the Eagles.

Aaron Brown and Olivier Hanlan were the leading scorers for the Eagles as usual, and they both netted 15. Both players shot 3 for 6 from 3 which is a 3-pt % from BC's top two scorers that would typically give them the opportunity to win. Today however, the Eagles never really had a chance. Eddie Odio added 5 points off the bench on 2 of 3 shooting but he had almost as many turnovers as points in the game, finishing with 4.

Boston College scored only 8 points in the first 12 minutes of the game, which put them on pace for only 29 for the game. Fortunately, scoring heated up a little after that once Olivier Hanlan got involved a little more, but the Eagles still only finished with 49. They managed to stay out of the LittleJohn Collesium record books by scoring more than 35, which the announcers pointed out was the fewest points allowed by Clemson since Brad Brownell took over as head coach.

Dennis Clifford played very limited minutes once again where he finished with all 0s in the box score, except for one shot attempt which was basically a missed layup. Will Magarity got his usual 3 3-point attempts up but failed to hit one as he usually does and added 2 missed free throws to go with his 0-4 from the floor.

Boston College got outrebounded badly, which ended up being the primary difference in the game as both teams shot similarly from the field and from 3. Clemson had 10 more rebounds overall and 13 offensive rebounds to BC's 6. Combine that with 8 more made free throws and 5 fewer turnovers and it is obvious that Clemson controlled this game from the tip just based on the box score without ever watching the game.

Boston College now heads to South Bend on Wednesday for a matchup with Notre Dame. The Irish were just upset at Pittsburgh this afternoon and will probably be hungry to get back in the win column.

BC loses by 9 to #10 Louisville in a game that was closer than the final score indicated.

The snow made it difficult for a lot of fans to make it to the game tonight and the Eagles could not practice yesterday, but the students did have a rare good showing in the stands to support the basketball team against Louisville. Boston College was competitive with Louisville much of the game but failed to ever take the lead, ultimately losing to Louisville 81-72.

Aaron Brown went for a career high 28 points on 10-22 shooting in the losing effort. Brown had 17 of his 28 in the first half, which kept BC within striking distance of Louisville, trailing by only two at the half. Brown shot 5-12 from beyond the arc as the Eagles shot 33% as a team from 3. Aaron Brown was not the high scorer for the game, though, as Chris Jones of Louisville matched him with 28 points on 10-13 shooting. Jones was also followed closely in scoring on his own team by Terry Rozier, who added 23, and Montrezl Harrell and Wayne Blackshear were also double-digit scorers for the Cardinals.

Olivier Hanlan did not have a great game, shooting only 31% from the field, but he was instrumental in BC having a chance for the upset. Hanlan dished out a career-high 9 assists in a losing effort. Five assists went to Aaron Brown, 2 to Will Magarity, and one each to Patrick Heckmann and Garland Owens. Aside from the career-high in assists for Hanlan, foul trouble was a big story in the game, ultimately putting an end to BC's upset hopes. Hanlan picked up his fourth foul of the game with more than 8 minutes left to play, which landed him a brief seat on the bench.

While he was sitting, though, BC had two possessions where they barely got any shot off and neither shot was good, so Olivier was quickly brought back in. He played about 8 minutes with four fouls but did finally disqualify when he picked up his 5th with 1:12 left to play in the game after Dennis Clifford failed to make a layup and cut Louisville's lead to 5. Once Hanlan fouled out, there was absolutely no hope for a BC comeback, but some fouling by both teams in the final minute extended the action to result in a 9-point Louisville victory.

Aside from Brown and Hanlan, Patrick Heckmann and Will Magarity both provided some bright spots for the Eagles on offense and defense. Heckmann finished with 14 and Magarity with 9 points.

The loss to Louisville should be considered a moral victory for BC fans, as the game was very close throughout. However, it is still too early to tell if Louisville is really a top 10 team nationally or a top 4 team in the conference. In Louisville's two biggest tests in ACC play so far, the have lost to both UNC and Duke.

Stat of the game: BC and Louisville combined for only 11 bench points.

Next up: at Clemson Saturday

BC took an early lead and extended it to as many as 15 before Harvard clawed back and turned the game into an OT thriller.

It took 5 extra minutes of action, but Boston College ended two losing streaks tonight. The Eagles had lost 3 straight heading into the Harvard game and had lost their last 6 to Harvard. Fortunately, both of those streaks came to an end tonight.

Aaron Brown had a good first half and helped the Eagles get off to a fast start which resulted in as much as a 15 point lead. On the way to that 15 point lead BC made 3 consecutive 3-pointers. Things were looking good at that point for the Eagles but Boston College failed to hit another 3 the entire rest of regulation. Patrick Heckmann finally knocked down a 3 with 45 seconds left in OT, finishing 4 of 17 from beyond the arc.

Aaron Brown finished with 12 points which is his lowest scoring output in a BC victory this season. When Brown scores 12 or more the Eagles are now 8-2. Olivier Hanlan lead the Eagles with 17 points, Dennis Clifford had 13, and Patrick Heckmann added 12, including the big 3 in OT.

BC struggled from the free throw line again tonight, shooting 6 of 15. The Eagles need to shoot better from the line if they want to win close games in the ACC. In any league, you need to shoot at least 50% from the line to have a chance at winning and in the ACC it will probably take 70-80% from the Eagles to notch victories.

With 2:26 left in the game, Harvard took a 47-45 lead. Aaron Brown then got a layup with 18 seconds left to send it to OT at 47-47.

In overtime, Dmitri Batten scored first for the Eagles and Clifford, Hanlan and Heckmann all helped out with some scoring for the Eagles to control the extra time and get the victory. At 56-52, BC was called for a ten second violation which allowed Harvard to cut the lead to 2 but that was as close as Harvard got in OT.

You certainly cannot say that this team doesn't play defense as you could with the team last year, since BC only gave up 47 points in regulation, but points sure are tough to come by, especially from the free throw line against Harvard. In order to have a chance Saturday against UVA, the Eagles will have to shoot better all around. The Eagles face UVA at home where they have gone to OT in their last two games. If the Eagles take UVA to OT it will certainly be a moral victory, but getting their first ACC win by knocking off undefeated UVA would be a lot sweeter.

Hanlan and Odio lead the Eagles, both scoring in double digits, en route to the loss.

Olivier Hanlan lead the Eagles in the first half with 13 points to keep the Eagles within sight of Miami at the half. Hanlan continued to be a key player en route to close loss to Miami 60-56. Hanlan shot very well from beyond the arc, finishing 4-8, but he did not shoot well from the line, finishing only 1-4. One more three or a few free throws and it might have been the difference. BC shot 5-for-11 from the free throw line which made up for them only missing one free throw at home against Pitt.

Early in in the second half it looked like Miami was headed to victory until Boston College went on a nice 6-0 after the second TV timeout of the second half to get BC within 6. Angel Rodriguez, Miami's best player today, was on the bench during that run. When Rodriguez came back in it seemed briefly that Miami would take control of the game but BC slowly chipped away at the lead.

Eddie Odio scored 13, including 3 3-pointers in his return to his hometown. Odio's second 3-pointer brought BC to within 4 of Miami with 8 minutes to play. This was a welcome surprise after Odio only scored four against Pitt and Miami looked like it was going to cruise to a victory early in the second half. However, both teams struggled to score so BC was never completely out of it. Odio did seem to steal Heckmann's minutes today as Heckmann would have finished with zero field goal attempts until he chucked up a 3 at the buzzer. Heckmann started the game but didn't see the floor much after throwing the ball away in the first half. Jim Christian was obviously not willing to see the same sloppiness out of Heckmann he saw against Pitt.

Aaron Brown took far fewer shots than he did against Pitt, but Brown's first 3 of the game tied it with 5 minutes left in the game. Brown finished with 5 points on 2 of 6 shooting.

It was an exciting finish to the game whether you were a BC fan praying for the upset or as a Miami fan. A shot clock violation on Miami got BC the ball back down 3 with 1:12 left. On BC's possession, Hanlan missed off the rim on a drive to the hoop. Miami then again failed to scored and Hanlan was fouled by Rodriguez, sending him to the line for a 1 and 1. Hanlan did not convert and Miami returned the favor when McClellan also missed the front end of the 1 and 1. Hanlan then got a wide open look from 3 with the opportunity to tie and 6 seconds left, but after hitting every part of the rim it did not drop. This time Tonye Jekiri hit the front end of a 1 and 1, essentially ending the game.

Boston College only had 6 turnovers so it was a much better game to watch than the Pitt game when they had 17 but unfortunately it still resulted in a loss. The Eagles fell to 7-7 on the season and 0-3 in the ACC. It will take several surprises for BC to finish with any postseason tournament opportunities, but the game today at least gives fans hope that BC can beat some decent ACC teams this year.

Next up: vs. Harvard on Wednesday.
