Four wins away from glory

Here we are. The final stretch. Four wins away from glory.

After the Boston College men’s hockey team wrapped up their huge Hockey East Championship win over #2 BU on Saturday night, another game across the country was wrapping up. In the NCHC, #3 Denver rode a late surge to defeat the Omaha Mavericks in their conference championship game, which had the cascading effect of vaulting UMass into the NCAA tournament and leaving out Colorado College. The full bracket was worked out from there and released on Sunday evening:

The 2024 NCAA hockey tournament bracket will see Boston College play Michigan Tech, the CCHA champion, on Friday afternoon in Providence and then, if they advance, the winner of Wisconsin/Quinnipiac. BC earned the #1 seed and it is paying dividends now, because this is about as easy of a path as you can get to the Frozen Four. MTU is ranked just 32nd nationally in Pairwise and is in the tournament by virtue of their auto-bid from winning their conference. Plus, both Wisconsin and Quinnipiac were upset in their own conference tournaments and have looked vulnerable in recent weeks.

Though QU are the reigning national champions, they don’t have the same top end offensive talent that they had last year and have dropped some pretty lousy games in a weak conference. St. Lawrence (#43 in Pairwise) beat QU 3-0 in the ECAC semifinals, Clarkson (#36) beat them in OT earlier this month, and Cornell (the only tournament team they’ve played since November) beat them in OT in January. BC beat them in the first game of the season on their banner night, too, before the Eagles’ freshman had even gotten their footing.

Wisconsin hasn’t been much better recently either. They lost a three-game series to Ohio State (#26) in the Big Ten quarterfinals, a very poor showing for a team that is supposed to play a great style of playoff hockey. But maybe it’s mostly match-up based, because Ohio State also swept them during the regular season, but the Badgers’ only other losses since the beginning of February came in a series split against Michigan State (#4) and a series split against Minnesota (#6) in OT. Wisconsin looks like a more formidable opponent than Quinnipiac mostly because they play in a competitive Big Ten and have traded punches with some of their top programs.

Looking around at the other parts of the bracket, it should amuse BC fans everywhere that BU is getting shipped off to South Dakota to play their regional instead of traveling down the Mass Pike to play in Springfield. BU will lack any kind of homefield advantage because UMass is hosting the Springfield regional and was the last team to slip into the NCAA tournament, so they are obligated to play there. The tournament selection committee had to avoid the first round Hockey East match-up, so their solution was to send the Terriers out west. Lol.

If BC makes it to the Frozen Four, it will be very interesting to see who comes out of the Missouri regional to face them. The Eagles swept Michigan State at home earlier this season, so that seems like a pretty appealing option, all things considered. But the threat of North Dakota or Michigan battling their way to the Frozen Four could make things interesting. The Big Ten teams especially have been in some playoff dogfights already this year, so the one that makes it to St. Paul is going to be battle-tested.

Finally, there is something I need to address. There is a very real possibility that the 2024 national championship game could come down to Boston College and Boston University. BC is a heavy favorite to reach the title game, and BU is a very talented team with a lot of firepower, despite their loss to BC in the Hockey East championship. BU’s regional is slightly harder than BC’s regional, and the Terriers would have to get through some tough match-ups against likely #6 Minnesota and #3 Denver in order to reach the title game, but the path is absolutely there. It would mark the second time in history that college hockey’s greatest rivalry met in a national championship game, and it would give BC the chance to avenge the program’s loss in 1978. Plus, with both programs tied at 5 total national championships, they would be playing for some serious bragging rights.

Boston College will play Michigan Tech at 2pm ET on Friday March 29th in Providence, RI. If they advance, they will face the winner of Wisconsin/Quinnipiac on Sunday March 31st at 4pm ET. The winner of that contest will advance to the Frozen Four in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Can BC keep the momentum going?

On Sunday night, the second round of the NIT will commence when the Boston College men’s basketball team takes on the UNLV Rebels out in the desert. BC has had quite a successful postseason for their standards, winning two games in the ACC tournament, taking Virginia to OT, and then defeating Providence earlier this week in the NIT’s first round. They’ll look to continue that hot streak against UNLV, who are coming fresh off of a big win against Princeton.

These games are getting big!

On Friday afternoon, the Boston College men’s hockey team will face off against UMass for an in-state battle to determine who will play in the Hockey East championship game on Saturday night. The Eagles are looking to take home their first Hockey East tournament trophy since 2012, while UMass is aiming to win their third Hockey East tournament in four years. BC swept the Minutemen back in early February, but that is certainly no guarantee of future victory, because it’s do-or-die in the playoffs.

What a season for Fowler!

On Thursday afternoon, the three finalists for the Mike Richter Award were announced, and Boston College goalie Jacob Fowler was among the finalists, alongside Wisconsin’s Kyle McClellan and Colorado College’s Kaidan Mbereko. The Richter Award is given annually to college hockey’s best goaltender.

Fowler has had an incredible freshman season, finishing the regular season statistically in the top-10 for Goals Against Average and Save Percentage, all while backstopping the far-and-away best team in the nation. He has kept teams like #2 Boston University, #5 Michigan State, #7 Maine, #8 Quinnipiac, and many others in check, leading Boston College to the top seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament and giving the Eagles a real shot at contending for their first national championship since 2012. It’s especially incredible the Fowler has achieved these results as a freshman, too. Only one player has previously won the Richter Award as a freshman (Northeastern’s Devon Levi in 2021-22).

The award will be handed out on April 12th during Frozen Four weekend in St. Paul, MN.

On Wednesday, the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation announced their top-10 finalists for the 2024 Hobey Baker Award, and two Boston College players were on the list: Cutter Gauthier and Will Smith. The Hobey is given annually to college hockey’s top player, so it makes sense that two of the best players on the nation’s best teams would be finalists.

Will Smith has had an incredible freshman season, leading the entire nation in points while leading the best line on college hockey. Smith has completely lived up to the hype surrounding him after he was taken 4th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, the highest-ever selection for a Boston College player. His offense has been instrumental to BC’s huge season at the top of the nation.

Cutter Gauthier isn’t far behind Smith himself, statistically. Gauthier leads the nation in goals with 32 and has just six fewer points (52) than his teammate Smith, who leads the nation in that category. What’s so impressive about Cutter’s performance this year is that he’s done it largely without the all-star supporting cast that Smith, Leonard, and Perreault have enjoyed with each other. Andre Gasseau and Oskar Jellvik are certainly very talented players, but Gauthier’s performance on that line has required him to be the absolute offensive focal point, constantly drawing tough defense and being forced to make plays in heavy traffic. He’s excelled at it, which is why he was a finalist for Hockey East Player of the Year and is a likely candidate to be a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, too.

The Hobey Hat Trick (the three finalists) will be announced on April 4th, and the award itself will be handed out on April 12th during Frozen Four weekend in St. Paul, MN.

In just his second year at the helm of the Boston College men’s hockey program, head coach Greg Brown has won the Bob Kullen Award for Hockey East Coach of the Year. Brown has coached BC all the way to the top of national pairwise standings, establishing a record so strong that the Eagles will be the #1 overall seed in the 2024 NCAA tournament no matter what happens in the conference playoffs across the country.

Boston College is led by some young all-star players in Cutter Gauthier, Will Smith, Ryan Leonard, Gabe Perreault, Jacob Fowler, and others, but it has been Brown’s leadership that has driven them to success. We’ve seen a lot of teams with “one-and-done” type stars flame out and struggle against hard-nosed veteran teams, but BC has blown by everybody this season. Whether it be defending national champions Quinnipiac or archrival and fellow powerhouse Boston University, Brown has led the Eagles against a huge variety of teams and play-styles with an inexperienced roster and has come out the other side with possibly the best Hockey East team since the early 1990s. It’s been a masterclass in utilizing a high level of talent in the best way possible.

Brown beat out the Jay Pandolfo (BU), Mike Souza (UNH), and Ben Barr (Maine) for the award. It’s been a strong year for the conference, and it required this huge success for Greg Brown to earn this award, especially seeing as Maine coach Ben Barr oversaw a huge turnaround for the Black Bears from a middling Hockey East team last year to an NCAA tournament team this year.

On Tuesday evening, the Boston College Eagles men’s basketball team participated in their first postseason game since 2018 when they faced off against the Providence Friars in the first round of the 2024 NIT. BC felt that their season ended prematurely after they gave up a lead to Virginia in the ACC Tournament and eventually fell to the Cavaliers in overtime, ending an impressive run that could’ve rivaled the one made by NC State, who eventually won the ACC Championship. They rectified that loss by defeating PC, 62-57, even though the Friars were missing their best player.

The game started out fairly slow on offense for both teams, as they started to adjust to the NIT’s wider lanes and immediately got physical on defense. PC was missing Devin Carter, their best player and the recipient of the 2023-24 Big East Player of the Year award, so it’s understandable that the Friars struggled to score at times. But PC’s Josh Oduro managed to pick up the early slack, as did BC’s Devin McGlockton, and then the scoring really got started a few minutes in.

The teams went back-and-forth for much of the first half, mostly finding success around the rim and doing a good job of drawing fouls. The referees weren’t really allowing the kind of physical defense that helped propel BC to wins against Miami and Clemson in the ACC tournament, so Earl Grant had to adjust his team’s strategy in real time. The Friars maintained a lead for most of the half, but the Eagles were never far behind despite Quinten Post picking up his third foul with several minutes left. With a few nice steals and scores in transition, the Eagles managed to tie it up multiple times and never trailed by more than four points before finally taking a 1-point lead just before halftime. They led the Friars 31-30 heading into the locker room.

The second half did not begin well for Boston College, as they committed a handful of turnovers and fouls almost immediately and gave PC some extra opportunities. BC’s offense looked to be operating a lot better than PC’s, but those costly mistakes meant that the Eagles couldn’t establish a lead of any kind. The fouling got so bad that Providence was in the bonus already with just 12 minutes to go. Just way too many unnecessary reach-ins and poor decision-making when defending ballhandlers.

Providence, on the other hand, was hardly being called for any fouls. Quinten Post and other Eagles tried their best to battle in the paint, but they just weren’t getting the same calls that the Friars were getting on the other end on shot attempts. BC was definitely fouling more than PC, but PC’s whistle still seemed to be a bit lopsided. Soon enough, Quinten Post picked up his fourth foul and the Eagles were barely managing to hang around in a tie ballgame. It seemed that only thing the Eagles could get going were QP and McGlockton creating looks in the post, because Claudell Harris Jr. was ice cold on his jumpers.

McGlockton wasn’t far behind Post in getting his fourth foul and suddenly the Eagles had to find a way to compete without their two best big men. Mason Madsen started to step up, cleaning up some boards well and hitting a pretty floater off of the glass, and some drives to the paint by Harris and Elijah Strong finally resulted in some foul calls and free throws. Strong especially had a good performance down the stretch, hitting a three, a very tough layup through contact, and making some great effort plays to keep BC in it. But Providence’s Jayden Pierre would not go away, hitting a huge three and helping to facilitate the PC offense to keep it close. The game was tied 57-57 with just over a minute remaining.

Claudell Harris finally got out of his funk with a clutch stepback three-pointer as the game entered the final minute, giving BC a three-point lead. Then Harris came up with an absolutely huge steal on the next possession, breaking away from the pack for an uncontested dunk, but got stuffed by the rim. Fortunately Devin McGlockton was there to clean up the miss, putting in a layup and giving BC a 5-point lead, the biggest lead of the game by any team. Another empty PC possession on the following play led the Eagles to win as the clock expired, 62-57.
