With less than three weeks to go until Greensboro, here's where things stand:
Team | W | L | GB | PCT |
Virginia Cavaliers | 12 | 1 | -- | 0.923 |
Notre Dame Fighting Irish | 11 | 3 | 1.5 | 0.786 |
Duke Blue Devils | 10 | 3 | 2 | 0.769 |
Louisville Cardinals | 8 | 5 | 4 | 0.615 |
North Carolina Tar Heels | 8 | 5 | 4 | 0.615 |
Syracuse Orange | 8 | 5 | 4 | 0.615 |
Miami Hurricanes | 7 | 6 | 5 | 0.538 |
Clemson Tigers | 7 | 7 | 5.5 | 0.500 |
Florida State Seminoles | 7 | 7 | 5.5 | 0.500 |
Pittsburgh Panthers | 6 | 7 | 6 | 0.462 |
North Carolina State Wolfpack | 6 | 7 | 6 | 0.462 |
Wake Forest Demon Deacons | 4 | 10 | 8.5 | 0.286 |
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets | 3 | 11 | 9.5 | 0.214 |
Virginia Tech Hokies | 2 | 11 | 10 | 0.154 |
Boston College Eagles | 1 | 12 | 11 | 0.077 |
After removing Syracuse from the equation, here are the tournament seeds:
1. Virginia
2. Notre Dame
3. Duke
4. North Carolina
5. Louisville
6. Miami
7. Clemson
8. Florida State
9. N.C. State
10. Pittsburgh
11. Wake Forest
12. Georgia Tech
13. Virginia Tech
14. Boston College
– Notre Dame is currently the 2 seed, though the Irish are a game up on Duke. If the Irish and Blue Devils finish the regular season with the same record and only tied with each other, Duke will jump Notre Dame by virtue of their win over Virginia (the Duke / Notre Dame regular season series ended 1-1).
– Louisville and North Carolina are currently tied for the no. 4 seed and the final double bye. If the season ended today, North Carolina would edge Louisville for the #4 since UNC wins the three-way tiebreaker over Syracuse and Louisville (the Orange will still be included in all tiebreaker scenarios). North Carolina is 2-1 vs. the other two teams, while Louisville is now 1-2.
– Clemson and Florida State are currently tied for 7th with identical 7-7 records. If the season ended today, Clemson would edge Florida State with a win over what would have been 6th seeded Syracuse, the best win of either team. Clemson and Florida State split the regular season series at a game apiece.
– N.C. State edges Pittsburgh for the #9 seed. The Wolfpack knocked off Pitt, 68-50, back on January 3.
And here's how the ACC Tournament would shake out if the season ended today:
First Round - Tuesday, March 10
(12) Georgia Tech vs. (13) Virginia Tech -- 1 p.m., ESPN 2 / ACC Network
(11) Wake Forest vs. (14) Boston College -- 3 p.m., ESPN2 / ACC Network
Second Round - Wednesday, March 11
(8) Florida State vs. (9) N.C. State -- Noon, ESPN / ACC Network
(5) Louisville vs. (12) Georgia Tech / (13) Virginia Tech winner -- 2 p.m., ESPN / ACC Network
(7) Clemson vs. (10) Pittsburgh -- 7 p.m., ESPN / ACC Network
(6) Miami vs. (11) Wake Forest / (14) Boston College winner -- 9 p.m., ESPN / ACC Network
Quarterfinals - Thursday, March 12
(1) Virginia vs. (8) Florida State / (9) N.C. State winner -- Noon, ESPN2 / ACC Network
(4) North Carolina vs. (5) Louisville / (12) Georgia Tech / (13) Virginia Tech winner -- 2 p.m., ESPN 2 / ACC Network
(2) Notre Dame vs. (7) Clemson / (10) Pittsburgh -- 7 p.m., ESPN / ACC Network
(3) Duke vs. (6) Miami / (11) Wake Forest / (14) Boston College winner -- 9 p.m., ESPN / ACC Network
For BC, even though there are still five games left to go, the Eagles and Demon Deacons are already zeroing in on that 11 vs. 14 game on Tuesday in Greensboro. The Eagles end the regular season hosting Wake Forest on March 7, which would give BC consecutive games against the same opponent for the third time in ACC play.
In 2010-11, the Eagles ended the regular season against Wake and caught the Demon Deacons in the first round of the ACC Tournament—both BC wins. Two years later and it was Georgia Tech that BC faced in back-to-back meetings—again, two BC wins. Let's hope that should BC catch Wake in consecutive games this year, it'll go as well as it did the first two times that's happened.
