The Book 2022: September recap - numbers, numbers, numbers

The college football regular season breaks down neatly into thirds covering September, October and November. With that in mind, here's a look at numbers related to power ratings, win totals, under and overachievers, strength of schedule, etc, from the first third of the year, with a deeper look at Boston College.

Boston College

At this point in time, most of us have started to get past what looks to be a lost BC football season. Per ESPN FPI, the Eagles have just a 1.3% chance to get bowl eligible with six wins.

The Book has BC finishing with a record of 3-9 (actually 3.08 wins to 8.92 losses).

If you want something to really shake you, per Jeff Sagarin, Boston College would be just a 3.85 point favorite this week over HOLY CROSS on a neutral field, which makes me shudder, but more so that the Eagles and Crusaders actually do play next year at Alumni.

Here is how the BC schedule looks in terms of win totals through the remainder of the season, based on current power ratings and games already played.

Do stats lie?

In the case of Boston College, no. These aren't Book created stats, these are right from cfbstats.com, but they still tell the story. I've broken these up into Good and Bad stats and they cover the FBS games that BC has played so far, so nothing vs Maine, which gives a truer account of what is going on.

Key Stats - Bad Amount Rank
Scoring Offense 15.0 118
Rushing Offense 42.67 128
Passing Offense 191.3 101
Punt Returns 0 131
First Downs 15.7 109
Turnover Margin (1.67) 124
3rd down offense 29.55% 107
10+ Yd Plays OFF Plays 32 107
10+ Yd Rush OFF Plays 6 124
Sacks Allowed 12 121
Tackles for loss allowed 24 108
Rushing Defense 178.67 98
10+ Yd Rush Allowed 16 80

Most of these are related to the offense, although one of the defensive keys this season was stopping the run and that has not been a strong suit. It is worth noting that BC has no punt returns at all to date vs FBS competition.

Key Stats - Good Amount Rank
Penalties Yds/game 33.0 12
Redzone Offense 100% T1
3rd down defense 32.56 32
10+ Yd Pass DEF Plays 21 17

There are some good, most notably an improvement in third down defense, but even redzone offense which looks great is a bit misleading as the Eagles have only had 6 trips in there all season.

Overachievers/Underachievers

The list below covers the biggest overachievers and underachievers year to date, based on the delta between their initial power rating and current power rating. It also shows the correlation between that success or lack of success and how you would do betting on those teams.

The rank delta shows how many spots up or down in the rankings those teams have gone based on that same factor.

Of the top 10 overachievers, all 10 have positive profits YTD combining both spread and moneyline picks. The 10 underachievers would have cost you a whopping 75.71 units to date, including the huge Nebraska moneyline loss to Georgia Southern. Only the 10th biggest failure is positive profit wise so far.

And yes, Boston College is the 9th biggest underachiever so far in 2022, surrending 29 spots in our rankings, 6.65 points in the power rating and costing you 8.42 units of profit.

These numbers do include games vs FCS competition.

Strength of Schedule

Our strength of schedule is calculated very simply. Who have you played and what is their current power rating. Add them up, divide by the number of games played and presto, a number.

The full breakdown of this is in the eye chart at the bottom of the posting, but suffice to say if you've started well and have a soft remaining schedule, you are probably in great shape and conversely, if you've started poorly and the meat of your schedule still to come, it might get rough.

To date, Boston College has played the 83rd ranked schedule, but the final eight games see the Eagles face the 48th ranked one.

Interesting that six of the ten easiest remaining slates are with ACC teams.

These numbers do include games vs FCS competition.

Conference Strength

Using the same method as Sagarin does, we've ranked the top conferences. This is a weighted system, with the teams in the middle of your conference pulling the most weight and gradated to the top and bottom.

Not surprising but the SEC leads the way, followed by the Big 12 and then Big 10. The ACC is fifth and last among the Power Five, with the average ACC team rated 9 points behind the average SEC team.

The breakdown per conference divisions are shown as well.

These numbers do include games vs FCS competition.

The Eye Chart

What's below is somewhat of an eye chart, but hopefully the legend below will help. Go to the bottom and scroll over to see all columns.

Power rating/PR Delta - this measures what the change in power rating has been from pre-season to the end of week 4. These can legitimately be used to figure out how many points better or worse you are now than you were then.

SOS to date - is the strength of schedule ranking. SOS to date covers week 0 through week 4, which SOS to play, shows the strength of schedule, based on current power ratings, for the remainder of the year.

Win Totals - these show what our projected Book win totals are based on our preseason spreads for all teams as well as what the closing Vegas win total number was. It also shows the moneyline for each side of that bet, as well as what the nation bet on these in terms of number of bets and amount wagered.

Of note, historic doormats Vanderbilt and Kansas have already gone over their predicted win totals for 2022. The Commodores were +100 to go over, the Jayhawks -130 to do the same.

Boston College closed at 6 1/2 wins with the under at -135 and the over at +115.

Betting - this shows how teams have done using the Book spreads in total against the Vegas spread and moneylines as well as the total profit or loss for each of those teams.

All of these except the betting stats do include FCS games.
