Field Hockey
Boston College field hockey is still undefeated after this week! The Eagles defeated UConn 2-1 on Friday and BU 3-2 on Sunday.
UConn started off the scoring in Friday’s game, knocking a goal in off a rebounded penalty corner just 3 minutes into the game. Slightly over 10 minutes later, Jaime Natale tied things up with an unassisted goal. The game remained tied until the late 4th quarter, when Milagros Arteta scored her 5th goal of the season to put BC up 2-1. This was her 3rd game winning goal of the season.
The Eagles got off to a better start on Sunday, jumping to a 2-0 lead over BU in the 1st quarter. Sarah Johnson scored 6.5 minutes in to put BC up 1-0, and Fusine Govaert scored off a penalty corner under a minute later to increase the Eagles lead to 2.
BU got within 1 goal in the 2nd quarter off a penalty corner, and then Terrier Payton Anderson scored off her own rebound to tie the game in the 3rd. The game stayed tied until minute 45, when Govaert scored her second goal of the game, also off a penalty corner, to earn BC the 3-2 win.
TL;DR: BC is now 6-0 thanks to a 2-1 win over UConn and a 3-2 win over BU.
Men’s Soccer
The Eagles picked up a win and a tie this past week, defeating Hartford 1-0 on Monday and earning a 1-1 draw against Notre Dame on Friday.
Junior Michael Suski took a long pass from Diego Ochoa just under 8 minutes into the game against Hartford, converting for the only goal of the game. The Eagles limited Hartford to just 2 shots on goal throughout the entire match.
BC scored fairly early on against Notre Dame as well, as Stefan Sigurdarson picked up his 3rd goal of the season just under 16 minutes into the game. A Notre Dame red card 34 minutes into the game led to BC playing a man up for a huge chunk of the game, but Notre Dame still managed to tie things up at minute 43, and BC wasn’t able to regain the lead.
TL;DR: BC has a 2-1-1 record after defeating Hartford 1-0 and tying Notre Dame.
Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team also picked up a win and a draw last week, tying Harvard 3-3 on Thursday before defeating Holy Cross 5-3 on Sunday.
The Eagles and the Crimson had a scoreless 1st half before both offenses exploded in the 2nd. Harvard started the scoring at minute 50, but Ella Richards tied things up just about 8 minutes later for her 7th goal of the year. Harvard took the 1 goal lead back minutes later, only for Richards to knock a loose ball into the net and tie the game at 2 in the next minute.
Jenna Bike earned a goal off a deflected shot late in the game to give the Eagles their only lead of the game, but Harvard tied the game at 73:22 and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. BC goalie Wiebke Willebrandt really kept BC in this one, making an impressive 11 saves.
Despite a shaky start, the Eagles had a more successful outing against Holy Cross on Sunday. Samantha Agresti headed in a Mia Karras shot at 16:20 to put BC up 1-0, only for Holy Cross to score 3 straight goals and take a 3-1 lead.
The Eagles offense hit their stride late in the game, scoring 4 goals from minute 71 through the end of the game. Jenna Bike started things off, scoring off a deflected Alison Heckman shot. Samantha Agresti scored a minute and a half later to tie things up, and Laura Gouvin regained BC’s lead at minute 88. Both goals were assisted by Ella Richards. Linda Boama deflected Andi Barth’s shot in as the game drew to a close to score her 6th goal of the season and ensure a 5-3 BC victory.
TL;DR: BC is 6-1-1 after tying Harvard 3-3 and defeating Holy Cross 5-3.
Volleyball
The volleyball team had a busy week, playing 5 games and winning 4.
BC started the week with a 3-1 win over Northeastern on Tuesday, winning the 1st set 25-19 and the 2nd set 25-20 before dropping set 3 by a score of 25-15. The Eagles squeaked out a 26-24 win in the 4th set to earn the victory. Clare Naughton led all players with 20 kills, while Anna Murphy led the game with 21 digs.
On Friday afternoon, the Eagles picked up another 3-1 win, this time against Army. BC won the 1st set 25-20, but Army tied things up with a 25-22 win in the 2nd. The Eagles had strong showings in the remaining sets, winning 25-16 and 25-18. Amaka Chukwujekwu led all players with 4 blocks, and Murphy again led the game with digs, this time recording 23.
BC lost the first game of the season on Friday night, dropping a close 3-2 match to St. John’s. St John’s won the first 2 sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-19, but BC followed up with a pair of 25-20 wins. St. John’s just managed to win the game, taking a 15-13 victory in the tiebreaker. Gabby McCaa scored an impressive 4 aces in the game.
In their 3rd and final game at the St. John’s classic, BC got back to winning, taking down Fordham 3-1. The first set was a nail-biter, with BC not managing to win until the score got to 32-30. The Eagles won the 2nd set 25-19, before dropping the 3rd 26-24. The Eagles closed out the match with an easy 25-16 win.
BC closed out the weekend defeating Rhode Island in straight sets of 25-14, 25-16, and 25-21. Clare Naughton led all players with 14 kills, and Bridget Green scored 3 aces and led the game with 15 digs.
TL;DR: BC improved to 10-1 this season, defeating Northeastern and Army by scores of 3-1, falling to St. John’s 3-2, and then defeating Fordham 3-1 and Rhode Island 3-0.
Football
Football opens the season 2-0 after defeating UMass 45-28. The big story in this game was quarterback Phil Jurkovec’s injury. Jurkovec left the game with a hand injury, and was replaced by Dennis Grosel. It was announced earlier this evening that Jurkovec, as well as kicker Aaron Boumerhi, will likely miss the remainder of the season due to injuries.
TL;DR: The Eagles defeated UMass 45-28, but lost their starting quarterback in the process.
Men’s Cross Country
The Eagles picked up another 3rd place win this weekend, this time at the Friar Invitational. However, they were 1 of only 4 teams at the competition. The Eagles lost to Providence and Stony Brook, but beat UNH.
BC had 5 top 20 finishers, the same as they had in the Stony Brook Season Opener. UNH grad transfer James Wilkes led the Eagles, coming in 9th with a time of 25:35.98 and Brown grad transfer David Scherrer earned his 2nd 14th place finish of the season, completing the race in 25:58.25. The other top 20 BC finishers were sophomore Steven Jackson (15th, 26:08.27), freshman Peter Fox (19th, 26:30.36), and freshman Andrew Healey (20th, 26:38.49)
TL;DR: The Eagles have finished both races this season in 3rd place.
Women’s Cross Country
The Eagles started their season with a 2nd place finish at the Ken O’Brien Minuteman Invitational, finishing just behind Conn College despite grad student Lauren White winning the race with a time of 17:12. The Eagles finished ahead of UMass and BU.
Outside of White, BC had 7 top 20 finishers. In the top 10, grad student Kylee Raftis finished 4th with a time of 17:28, junior Sarah Flynn came in 6th with a time of 17:39, followed a fraction of a second later by Paige Carter in 7th place. The remaining top 20 BC finishers were Miriam Ruoff (17th, 18:07), Roshni Singh (18th, 18:08), Caroline McClelland (19th, 18:10), and Sorcha McAllister (20th, 18:11).
TL;DR: Lauren White won the race and BC came in 2nd in the first meet of the season.
Men’s Golf
The Eagles started the week at the Turning Stone Invitational, coming in 7th place, and ended the week by winning the Ryan T. Lee Collegiate. Junior Nick Cummings placed 8th in the Turning Stone Invitational. In the Ryan T. Lee Collegiate, BC not only won as a team, but had the winning player in sophomore Mac Lee. Also in the top 10 was freshmanBen Hong, who tied for 9th place.
TL;DR: After coming in 7th in their season opener, the Eagles ended the week with a 1st place finish.
Women’s Golf
BC opened the season with a 4th place finish at the Nittany Lion Invitational. Penn State, Delaware, and Princeton all finished ahead of the Eagles. BC only had 1 top 10 finisher - senior Nathalie Irlbacher, who came in 6th.
TL;DR: BC has a 4th place finish to start the season.
