If you’re looking to make a few (entertainment purposes only, totally virtual) dollars off of Boston College football success in week 1 of the season, you’ll need to count on BC’s offense to put up around 8 touchdowns.

According to The Action Network, the opening line for Saturday’s BC-Colgate game is BC -50.5.

The moneyline per this link is -500000, meaning you can make $0.02 on a $100 bet. This might be the first time I can ever recall looking at a line where I’m reasonably confident you’d probably be able to grow your $100 more over the course of three hours if you put it in a savings account (OK, maybe not, but almost certainly if you picked a random index fund on Robinhood).

If you like Colgate’s chances straight up, you can fund your retirement with a healthy bet at 1000-to-1 odds.

Also of note is that the over/under is 52.5, so in the line’s estimation, Colgate is expected to score 2 or fewer points.

The point spread isn’t too absurd - BC’s most recent game against a Patriot League foe was a 62-14, 48 point win over Holy Cross in 2018, which featured BC sprinting out to a 48-0 and 55-7 lead before things got a little weird(er) in the fourth quarter.

We all of course remember BC 76-Howard 0, and BC 54-Northeastern 0 as potential comparables.

If Colgate looks like the discombobulated team that was last seen getting blown out by Fordham this spring, BC -50.5 might not be too high a bar to clear. If they look more like the team that went on a little winning streak to end 2019 despite finishing with a 4-8 record, 50.5 might get tricky. We shall see!
