It’s that time of year again - the BC Interruption writers have voted and we’re presenting our end of year awards for the 2020-21 season! In a year that ended with Boston College lacrosse winning the NCAA Championship, it is no surprise that our first award goes to a women’s lacrosse player.

Our female Rookie of the Year is Belle Smith, the women’s lacrosse standout! Also receiving votes this year were Ally Van Timmeren (women’s basketball) and Gaby Roy (women’s hockey).

Coming into this season, Smith was the #2 recruit in the country and the #1 midfielder recruit. Upon her arrival at BC, Smith made it clear that these rankings were no mistake. In her first game as an Eagle, Smith scored 2 goals, recorded 2 assists, won 3 draw controls, and ended up with the game-winner.

Smith was held scoreless only twice this season and averaged 2.2 goals per game. She scored 5 goals twice (against Virginia Tech and Syracuse), and scored 3+ goals in 6 other games. She closed out her season with another 2 goals, 2 assists performance, this time in the National Championship game. With 47 goals and 65 points, she broke BC program records for a freshman.

Smith was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, a 2021 IWLCA Second Team All-American, and a USA Lacrosse Magazine Third Team All-American. She was also named to the IWLCA All-Northeast Region first team and was invited to the US National Team Tryout later this summer.

We’re looking forward to seeing the heights Smith will continue to take the women’s lacrosse program to!
