Boston College senior forward Steffon Mitchell informed Stadium yesterday of his entrance into the NCAA transfer portal.

Mitchell is a 6’8” forward who has been a fan favorite over his past 4 years at the Heights. This past season he started every game he was healthy for and averaged 9 points per game, 7 rebounds per game, and shot .462 from the floor. Not only that, but he was one of the Eagles’ biggest leaders on the squad in his final two seasons. He was a regular starter for all four of his years.

This move comes as a bit of a surprise, as Mitchell had made his intention to declare for the NBA draft known earlier this year. It makes sense that he could have gotten feedback he didn’t like from some scouts or friends in the NBA, which is leading him to re-evaluate his options for next year. If Mitchell does end up returning to NCAA basketball, but not with Boston College, it’s a huge blow for next year’s team for a player who seemingly could’ve been convinced to stick around. The leadership Mitchell could’ve provided for an almost brand new roster next year would be invaluable to a team that will be re-shaping its identity under a new coach in the years to come.

There aren’t a lot of high hopes in terms of on-the-court success for next year’s BC team, but culture-building, work ethic, and leadership will be priorities. Potentially losing Steffon Mitchell, when he could’ve easily stuck around and been a great presence both on the court and in the locker room, means the growing pains for head coach Earl Grant won’t be shrinking anytime soon.
