Brian Hamilton, college basketball writer The Athletic who writes extensively about coaching searches, has posted his take on the Boston College job and on potential candidates.
The article is subscriber-only so additional information and analysis is behind the paywall - but Hamilton’s bottom line is that he thinks Vermont’s John Becker would be the ideal candidate for the BC job.
Becker checks a number of boxes that could make him an attractive candidate. He is a native of Fairfield, Connecticut and a graduate of and former assistant at Catholic University, so he has New England and Catholic ties.
After spending five years as an assistant coach at Vermont, he has been the Catamounts’ head coach since 2011, and has experienced success. UVM has posted 20+ wins in each of Becker’s seasons at Vermont, and qualified for the NCAA tournament in 2017 and 2019, and likely would have in 2020 if not for the cancellation of the tournament.
The biggest negative on Becker’s resume would be the lack of exposure to and experience with a power conference like the ACC - but could his success and deep experience in New England outweigh that downside?
