It’s official.

After a few days of back and forth, and speculation to the contrary, the Pac-12 and Big Ten announced Tuesday the cancellation of their fall sports seasons.

While the Big Ten only announced the cancellation of the fall season whereas the Pac-12 announced the cancellation of all athletic competition through the end of the calendar year, the news comes as a blow to a recent surge in student-athlete based advocacy for a season, albeit with certain parameters and expectations for player safety and rights.

The news comes after the Mountain West announced a cancellation of its fall season Monday, and UMass announced a cancellation of its fall season Tuesday.

The Big 12, ACC and SEC now remain the only conferences in the Power 5 currently slated to play a fall sports schedule this upcoming season. However, with the Big Ten and Pac-12 bowing out, the season will certainly look different.
