The Patriot League announced Monday that all fall sports competitions will be cancelled. The Military Academy and Naval Academy were exempted from the cancellation because they “are unique in their environments and their missions within higher education,” the League said in a statement.
The move, while inevitable after the Patriot League’s long-time scheduling partner the Ivy League announced the suspension of its fall season, still comes as a blow as it marks yet another league that will not be playing fall sports due to COVID-19.
The move will lead to the cancellation of Boston College football’s contest against Holy Cross originally scheduled for October 31, bringing the tally of game cancellations to two for the Eagles.
The move, for the time being, will not apply to the winter sports season, as the league announced that a decision on winter sports will be made at a later date. The league also noted that it is exploring alternatives for fall student-athletes to provide future competitive experiences.
