Local power forward Gianni Thompson, Class of 2021, announced his commitment to Boston College earlier today. A hyper-local kid who currently plays at Brimmer and May in Newton (just a stone’s throw from the Chestnut Hill T stop), Thompson is ranked as a high three-star recruit on 247’s composite rating and 177th overall nationally. In short, it’s a pretty good get for the Eagles, who lock down a really talented local player from going anywhere else. Victories start in our backyard, after all.

He’s assembled a pretty impressive offer list, including teams like Providence, Penn State, Xavier, and Virginia Tech. His highlights (below) show pretty decent reasons why: he’s tall, athletic, and pretty skilled with the ball in his hands. At a reported 6-8, 205, he’ll likely need to add 10+ pounds to boost his presence down low, but there’s always time for that later.
He’s the first commit for the Eagles in the class of 2021, a group that will likely have a considerably different recruitment and evaluation process from is predecessors. With high school sports in jeopardy, many recruiters will have to rely on junior year game film. Whether that benefits the incumbent powers of college basketball or the underdogs remains to be seen.
Regardless, I like what I’ve seen from Gianni. Welcome to the Heights, and go Eags!
