The Boston College Eagles’ game against Virginia Tech wasn’t pretty. It resulted in Jared Hamilton and Nik Popovic leaving the game early with injuries. But, thanks to the efforts by Steffon Mitchell, the Eagles left Blacksburg Saturday afternoon with a win, completing a season sweep of the Hokies.
The win was the Eagles’ fifth road win of the season, which is the most since the 2010-11 season.
Regulation was a back and forth affair that went down to the wire. In the final seconds of regulation, Jairus Hamilton fouled Nahiem Alleyne who drained two free throws to evaporate a two point BC lead to force overtime.
In overtime, Mitchell was a monster on the glass, pulling four rebounds. Where Mitchell really shined, however, was in the final minute. Mitchell knocked a free throw in to tie the game up with 57 seconds left, and, after Julian Rishwain got a defensive board after a missed three pointer, Mitchell knocked in a layup, then pulled a defensive rebound on another missed three point attempt. Mitchell then knocked in two free throws to seal the game.
The Eagles, now at .500 on the year, travel to Miami Wednesday for a 7 PM game.
