Men’s Basketball Preview: Boston College vs Duke

The Devils are on the doorstep

NCAA Basketball: Boston College at North Carolina Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

BC got a tight much needed win over UNC and on the road no less. The Eagles were able to snap a 12 game losing streak against the Tar Heels. Despite turnovers, foul trouble and lack of offensive rebounds, the Eagles were able to hold off the Tar Heels by making key shots at the right time. As a reward the Ealges will have a rude homecoming as they play host to the 7th ranked Duke Blue Devils.

Previewing the Blue Devils

Since Duke pulverized the Eagles on New Year’s Eve they’ve gone 6-2 with back-to-back losses to Clemson and Louisville which is why they’ve fallen to seventh in the country. Despite not being as highly ranked as they were over a month this Duke team is still as talented and dominant as ever. Duke’s previous game against Syracuse saw the return of Wendall Moore Jr. after the freshman had missed the previous six games with a broken hand. The team is still averaging a dominant 18.2 point margin of victory, scoring an ACC best 83.4 points per game. The Blue Devils also lead the ACC in field goal percentage and blocks per game. They are second in assists, rebounds, and steals per game, and, fittingly enough, third in three-point percentage per game. Bottom-line in Space Jam terms the Duke Blue Devils are the Mon-Stars.

Player to Watch

Vernon Carey Jr. 6 weeks later Carey is still the same monster. Carey is top 5 in the ACC in points (17.8 ppg), rebounds (8.9 rpg), and blocks (1.6 bpg). Carey didn’t have a huge game when Duke hosted the Eagles on 12/31 but this is a player that BC will have to stop and one they have no real answer for. Even if another player has a big game it will be because Carey will be drawing so much attention from the BC defense.

BC’s Best Chance to Win

A perfect storm of great BC play and bad Duke play. The Eagles have won some games this year when they were outmatched and Duke can be beaten. The game will be played in Conte Forum and it should be a strong showing from the students. If the Eagles can get off to a fast start and get the fans in it, maybe they can get Duke to tighten up. However, that still means that Carey, Jones, Stanley, or Hurt all have to have off-nights and BC needs to be firing on all cylinders.
