Well, the Beanpot is in the rearview mirror.

And, now, all of the attention for the Boston College Eagles comes back to the road to the conference championships. And what a road it has a potential to be. Right now, there are nine teams that have a realistic claim to eight spots in the conference tournament, and at this point every spot in the tournament is up for grabs.

This week, Boston College plays one of the two teams that, realistically, don’t have a claim to the tournament. Unlike their counterpart in Burlington, however, Merrimack has actually shown signs of life against some of the league’s best teams, most recently a 5-1 result against BU in Allston.

This a weekend that the Eagles could pick up four points. But it could go sideways as well. Let’s break it down.

Breaking Down the Series

  1. Being smart on the power play: Last week’s game was a rough one for the Boston University power play– not only did BU not score on the power play, BU actually conceded two short handed goals, which really stuck the dagger in the hearts of the Terriers. To be fair, this is not so much a trend– going into that game Merrimack had only scored one goal short handed– but it’s something to keep an eye on.
  2. Don’t concede dumb penalties: During the Beanpot consolation, BC took only two penalties. That’s good, especially considering BC scored two goals short handed. BC needs to continue that discipline. Merrimack is a better (not necessarily great) team on the power play than they are at even strength, so the Eagles should not give them the chance.
  3. Don’t play down to the opponent: Look, Merrimack is not as good as BC, that’s fairly obvious to everyone. But the Eagles can’t mess around with the Warriors, because they are good enough to make life difficult if the Eagles let them. The Eagles have punted lesser teams into the sun this year a few times, it’s just important that the Eagles keep their foot on the gas.

Random, Possibly Incorrect Fact from Merrimack’s Wikipedia Page

Merrimack is a private Augustinian college in North Andover, Massachusetts.

There really isn’t a whole lot more than that there. Oops!

I’m going to be in Boston for the Saturday game, so to celebrate, here is a Georgia infusion of a Boston classic.

I’m pretty comfortable picking a sweep for the Birds this weekend. 3-1, 4-1.
