The Boston College men’s hockey team opened 2020 in a big way, winning the first game of the year by a score of 8-3 and defeating the UVM Catamounts for the third time this season. The Eagles are now 12-4 overall and are on a 10 game winning streak.
BC started the game slow, with UVM dominating in shots and taking a 1-0 lead less than 5 minutes into the game. It took another 5 minutes for BC to get on the board, but once Ron Greco got the scoring started BC didn’t let up. The Eagles ended up taking a 3-1 lead into the first intermission after Marc McLaughlin and Aapeli Räsänen scored within seconds of each other late in the period.
UVM scored first in the second period (5 minutes in again) to cut BC’s lead to 2, but Greco snuck a puck off of the goalie’s skate from behind the net with 4 minute to go in the period to get the BC lead back to 2.
The Eagles completely dominated in the third period, scoring an even strength goal (Jesper Mattila), a shorthanded goal (Logan Hutsko with a beauty) and a pair of power play goals (David Cotton, Ron Greco with a tip-in to complete the hatty). UVM did score once in the third, but it was too little too late for the Catamounts to stage a comeback, particularly considering the Eagles picked up 20 odd SOG in the final period of play.
Next week, BC will face a challenge as they take on UMass, the current #1 in Hockey East.
