The game before Beanpot Monday always raises a degree of concern for the Boston College faithful because of the fear of sloppy play the game before the biggest game of the year.
Friday night in Amherst, however, raised nothing but confidence after Boston College blanked UMass Amherst 3-0 to pull the Eagles into a tie with the Minutemen for first place in the league.
The Eagles took the lead in the second period, though the goal was not obviously apparent. Alex Newhook put the puck into the UMass Amherst net off a rebound, but the on-ice official waved off the goal despite there appearing to be nothing illegal about the goal. Upon video review, the Eagles were awarded the goal and a lead that the Eagles did not look back from.
Logan Hutsko added to the goal total later in the second period, on a filthy goal on a counter attack that beat goaltender Matt Murray. McPhee added to the lead on a snipe from just outside the slot to give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage that they did not concede.
Spencer Knight got his fifth shutout of the season.
The Eagles will head to the TD Garden Monday night for the Beanpot against boston university.
