Men’s Hockey Eagles in the Pros 2019-20 Preview

As hockey season starts, it’s time to check in on where all of the BC men’s hockey alumni will be playing this season! Players do tend to move around a bit at the beginning of the season, particularly between NHL teams and their AHL affiliates, but this list is accurate as of early September.

NHL

Cam Atkinson: Atkinson will continue to play for the Columbus Blue Jackets this season. Atkinson recorded a career high 41 goals, 28 assists, and 69 points last season.

Thatcher Demko: Demko, who has split the past couple seasons between the AHL and NHL, is starting the season on the Vancouver Canucks roster.

Brian Dumoulin: Dumoulin, who has played for the the Penguins organization since 2012-13, will continue to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins this coming season.

Patrick Eaves: Eaves, who has been plagued by injuries and illnesses during his professional career, is entering his fourth season with the Anaheim Ducks organization. Last season he played 7 games for the Ducks, and 7 games for their AHL affiliates, the San Diego Gulls.

Johnny Gaudreau: Gaudreau is still a member of the Calgary Flames. Gaudreau recorded a career high 36 goals, 63 assists, and 99 points for the Flames last season.

Brian Gibbons: Gibbons has signed with the Carolina Hurricanes for the 2019-20 season. He spent last season with the Anaheim Ducks and the Ottawa Senators.

Noah Hanifin: Hanifin is entering his second season with the Calgary Flames. He had a career high 33 points with the Flames last season.

Kevin Hayes: Hayes recently signed a huge deal with the Philadelphia Flyers after spending last season with the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets.

Chris Kreider: Kreider, who has played for the New York Rangers since 2012-13, is entering his second season as an alternate captain for the squad. He matched a career high with 28 goals last season.

Michael Matheson: Matheson is entering his fifth season with the Florida Panthers. He matched a career high with 27 points last season.

Zach Sanford: Sanford is a member of the Stanley Cup Champion St. Louis Blues. He played 60 regular season NHL games last season.

Steve Santini: After spending 3 seasons in the New Jersey Devils organization, Santini will start 2019-20 with the Nashville Predators.

Cory Schneider: Schneider is entering his seventh season with the New Jersey Devils.

Alex Tuch: Tuch will continue to play for the Vegas Golden Knights, who he scored a career high 52 points for last season.

Colin White: White is entering his fourth year with the Ottawa Senators. He recorded a career high 41 points last season.

Miles Wood: Wood is sticking with the New Jersey Devils for the 2019-20 season.

AHL

Christopher Brown: Brown will start the 2019-20 season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He played 3 games for the AHL Penguins after BC’s season ended last year.

Patrick Brown: After playing all 5 of his professional seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes organization, captaining the Charlotte Checkers (AHL) for 3 of those, Brown is joining the Vegas Golden Knights’ AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.

Paul Carey: Carey will begin the season with the Providence Bruins. He split last season between Ottawa and Boston’s NHL and AHL teams. Carey scored 22 goals in 30 games for the PBruins last season.

Tommy Cross: Cross spent last season with the Cleveland Monsters, but is returning to Massachusetts this season to play for the Springfield Thunderbirds, Florida’s AHL affiliate.

JD Dudek: Dudek played 5 games for the Binghamton Devils (AHL) at the conclusion of BC’s season last year. This year, he will start the season with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Casey Fitzgerald: Fitzgerald, who played 4 games for the Rochester Americans last year, will stick with the Buffalo Sabres’ AHL affiliate to start the 2019-20 season.

Ryan Fitzgerald: Fitzgerald is entering his third full season with the Providence Bruins. He matched a career high with 37 points for the PBruins last season.

Matty Gaudreau: Gaudreau is heading out west to join the Stockton Heat, the AHL affiliate of his brother’s Calgary Flames.

Nathan Gerbe: Gerbe is entering his third season with the Cleveland Monsters after spending a years and a half playing in Switzerland.

Michael Kim: Kim will play for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2019-20 after playing 2 games for them at the end of last season.

Ian McCoshen: McCoshen will start the 2019-20 season with the Springfield Thunderbirds, the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers.

Parker Milner: Milner split last season between the AHL and ECHL, but will start the season in the AHL with the Hershey Bears.

Scott Savage: Savage is entering his second season with the Milwaukee Admirals, the Nashville Predators’ AHL affiliate.

Oliver Wahlstrom: Wahlstrom, who left BC to join the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the conclusion of last season, will remain with the New York Islanders’ AHL affiliate to start the 2019-20 season.

Steve Whitney: Whitney is entering his second season with the Hershey Bears, the AHl affiliate of the Washington Capitals.

Joe Woll: Woll will start his professional career with the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

ECHL

Barry Almeida: Almeida is entering his third season with the Worcester Railers, the New York Islanders’ ECHL affiliate. He scored 22 goals for the Railers last season.

Brad Barone: Barone will start the season with the Rapid City Rush, the Arizona Coyotes’ ECHL affiliate.

Kevin Lohan: Lohan, who played 40 games for the Orlando Solar Bears last season, will remain with Tampa Bay’s ECHL affiliate for the start of the 2019-20 season.

SPHL

Travis Jeke: Jeke will play for the Fayetteville Marksmen (formerly the Fayetteville FireAntz) this year. He recorded 38 points for Fayetteville last season.

Europe

Patch Alber: Alber is entering his second season in Germany and will be playing for the Fischtown Pinguins.

Austin Cangelosi: After spending last season in Norway, Cangelosi is headed to Germany to play for Nürnberg Ice Tigers this season.

John Muse: After playing for a number of AHL and ECHL teams over the years, Muse is heading to China to play for Kunlun Redstar in the KHL.

Philip Samuelsson: Samuelsson is heading to Europe to start the 2019-20 season. He will be joining HK Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic.

Ben Smith: Smith is entering his second season as an alternate captain for Adler Mannheim in Germany.

Cam Spiro: After playing in Denmark for 4 seasons, Spiro is moving to Germany to play for EHC Freiburg.

Joe Whitney: Whitney is entering his second season with Linköping HC in Sweden.

Recently Retired/Status Unknown

Brian Billett: Billett spent last season in the SPHL with the Pensacola Ice Flyers, but is retiring from professional and semi-professional hockey this year.

Brian Boyle: Boyle is currently an unrestricted free agent after splitting last season between the New Jersey Devils and the Nashville Predators.

Adam Gilmour: Gilmour, who spent last season with the Florida Everblades and Springfield Thunderbirds, has yet to sign anywhere for the 2019-20 season.

Stephen Gionta: Gionta retired earlier this summer to join the Tampa Bay Lightning’s scouting department.

Brian Gionta: Gionta retired from professional hockey last September after 16 seasons playing NHL hockey.

Jimmy Hayes: Hayes is currently an unrestricted free agent. He spent last season playing for the WBS Penguins in the AHL.

Brooks Orpik: Orpik announced his retirement this summer, after playing in the NHL for 15 seasons.
