Coming off a big conference win to open the season, Chestnut Hill was a little sleepy for Saturday’s game against the Richmond Spiders. Given the flawless weather and lopsided matchup, one could forgive those who lingered just a little bit longer in sun-soaked tailgating revelry.
The punctual among us were treated to a 46 yard touchdown rush by freshman phenom Zay Flowers on the opening drive. Flowers was electric, finishing the game with 92 yards on just 3 carries. BC added another first quarter score on an 84 yard drive. A 36 yard David Bailey run set up a 7 yard touchdown pass from Anthony Brown to tight end Korab Idrizi. Bailey finished the day with 98 yards on 13 carries.
After Nolan Borgersen hauled in his first career interception, the Eagles promptly marched down the field with a rushing attack that was simply too much for the Spiders. AJ Dillon punched it in from two yards out to make it 21-0 after the first quarter. BC rushed 27 times for 225 yards in the first half alone, and 48 times for 348 yards in total.
Richmond got on the board with a 35 yard touchdown pass from Joe Mancuso to Keyston Fuller, but BC answered with a 6 play 65 yard drive, punctuated by a 42 yard touchdown reception for Dillon. Though he hasn’t seen much throw game action in his BC career, it’s an effective way to get Dillon in the open field, where he’s positively deadly.
The BC offense kept piling on in the first half. Brown found a wide open Jake Burt on play-action for a 55 yard touchdown, Brown’s 3rd TD pass of the day, as the Eagles held a 35-10 lead at the break.
Coach Addazzio trotted out the first teamers to start the second half, and the offense picked up where they left off, rushing on 11 out of 12 plays on their opening drive, which resulted in Dillon’s 3rd touchdown of the game.
Though backup quarterbacks Matt Velecce and Dennis Grosel both saw game action, BC was content to keep pounding it on the ground. True freshman Patrick Garwo picked up 34 yards on six carries in an otherwise uneventful fourth quarter.
