It was quite the eventful game down in Tallahassee, with four goals scored in the first half and more to come. The Eagles were on the board first in the eleventh minute when a BC corner was almost cleared by the Seminoles’ defense, but kept in by Michela Agresti. She headed the ball back to the penalty spot where Sam Smith took a touch, then volleyed it right over the goalie and into the netting. Next goal was for FSU where Allie Augur was able to force FSU’s Kristen McFarland out wide, but not wide enough, as McFarland was able to send it into the empty goal. Florida State strikes again in the last ten minutes of the first half with Malaka Thomas finding the far post from the top of the box. It looked like it would be 1-2 going into the second, but BC evens up the score with four minutes left. Mia Karras sends a corner kick into the box, which is punched out by FSU’s keeper, Caroline Jeffers, but Gianna Mitchell is there to snap a one touch volley back past Jeffers.
This half, it’s FSU taking the lead for the second time of the night. Augur gets her hands on the ball, but isn’t quite able to capture the rebound, and Jenna Nighswonger capitalizes on her own rebound. In the 62 minute, Sam Smith gets her second goal of the night with a header off a corner kick just inside the far post. About six minutes later, Florida State responds with a header of their own as Gabby Carle is able to keep hers just inside the top right corner of the goal. Two minutes after that, the Seminoles take a two goal lead for the first time tonight with a left-footed shot from Nighswonger. The Eagles don’t give up, and Olivia Vaugh wins a two-on-one into the box to fire a shot over Jeffers’ head and into the upper netting. Though they try and hang on, BC takes home their first loss of the season with a final score of 4-5.
Despite the loss, Sam Smith had a two goal night, Michela Agresti earns her first career point with her assist, Jade Ruiters gets her first assist of the season, and Allie Augur reached a career-high seven saves on the night. The Eagles will return home for the next two ACC games, the first of which is next Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7pm hosting Miami.
