The Boston College volleyball team improved to 6-3 this weekend after going 2-1 in the Florida Atlantic University Invitational. The Eagles defeated Bethune-Cookman University 3-0 on Friday afternoon, before falling to FAU 3-1 later that day. Today, the Eagles defeated Southern Utah University in another 3-0 sweep.
The Eagles dominated play in their first game of the tournament against Bethune-Cookman, defeating the Wildcats in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-20, and 25-12. BC dominated with 42 kills to BCU’s 29, 6 aces to the Wildcats’ 3, and 7 blocks to BCU’s 3. Junior Clare Naughton and freshman Torey Baum were leaders in Friday morning’s game, with Naughton leading all players in kills (9) and Baum leading the Eagles with 11 digs. Jane DeJarld, as usual, also played a major role in BC’s win with a game-leading 18 assists and 2 aces.
Friday evening’s loss to Florida Atlantic University was a nail-biter, with each set ending up close. The Eagles took the first set by a score of 25-21, but FAU went on to win 3 straight sets by scores of 25-23, 25-22, and 27-25, earning the win. Jewel Strawberry was the standout for BC in this game, with an impressive 20 kills and 12 digs.
This morning, the Eagles picked up their second 3-0 victory of the tournament, winning in straight set of 25-12, 25-21, and 25-18 against the Souther Utah university Thunderbirds. The Eagles dominated across the board, leading in points (63 to 36), kills (46 to 28), aces (6 to 3), blocks (11 to 5), assists (42 to 25), and digs (45 to 34).
The Eagles return to Massachusetts next week to face Harvard in Cambridge before heading back out on the road for a tournament in Rhode Island.
