Drew Helleson, who is committed to join Boston College for the 2020-21 season, has been drafted in the second round of the NHL Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. He is the 47th overall pick. Helleson is the fourth future Eagle to be drafted in 2019, and the second to be picked by Colorado - Alex Newhook was taken 16th overall by the Avs last night.
Helleson is a solid 6’3” defenseman from Minnesota who plays for the USNTDP. In his first season with the USNTDP, Helleson recorded 40 points for the U.S. National U17 Team in 61 games. This past season he moved up to the U18 team, scoring 23 points in 64 games. Helleson is a strong puckhandler with good hockey sense, and he will be served well by spending time playing in the NCAA where he can really work with coaches and trainers to put on more muscle and add more physicality to his game.
Helleson should be a great addition to BC’s defensive corps and we’re excited to see how he develops over the next year before he gets to Conte Forum.
