Just a few weeks after acquiring his rights in a trade with the Winnipeg Jets, the Philadelphia Flyers signed Kevin Hayes to a seven year, $50 million contract per Bob McKenzie. The former Boston College star was due a big payday after posting the best season of his career in 2018-19, and the 27-year-old will now be taking home north of $7 million per season to play in Philadelphia.
Hayes put up a career best 55 points last season while playing for both the Jets and the New York Rangers. With the Flyers, he will be reunited with Alain Vigneault, his long time coach for much of his career in New York. At 27, this was likely the last chances for Hayes to cash in on a long term contract, and he certainly made the most of the leverage he had as one of the premier centers entering free agency this off-season.
Congratulations to Kevin on the big payday and best of luck in Philadelphia.
