Tonight, Team USA will take on Team Canada in a fight for the 2018 Olympic gold medal. The American and Canadian hockey teams are noted rivals, and played each other a number of times in the lead up to the Olympics. Team Canada has been more dominant than the Americans during these Olympic games and defeated the USA 2-1 in the preliminary round of play. However, the US dominated a strong Finland team to get to the gold medal game, scoring 5 goals on Finnish legend Noora Räty.
The US last won a gold medal in women’s ice hockey in 1998, with Boston College coach Katie King Crowley on the roster. This year’s team includes 5 current and former BC Eagles: alums Emily Pfalzer and Haley Skarupa, and current students Megan Keller, Kali Flanagan, and Cayla Barnes. (Barnes, who was set to be a freshman this season, will return as a freshman next season. Flanagan and Keller will return to BC as seniors.) An additional reason to root for Team USA is that Team Canada includes 2 BU alums: Marie-Philip Poulin and Jenn Wakefield.
