The Eagles suffered their first back-to-back losses of the season this week, coming up short again with a 2-1 loss to #11 Duke in Durham, North Carolina this afternoon. They are 0-2-1 in their toughest road stretch of the year, drawing with the Hurricanes in Miami last week before falling 1-0 to #3 UNC on Thursday.
The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead early today on with Olivia Vaughn’s ninth goal of the season. Sam Coffey connected with Vaughn on a counterattack, pushing a beautiful pass from behind midfield to Vaughn just outside the penalty box. Vaughn drilled it over Duke keeper Brooke Heinsohn. Duke evened it up at 32:52 after a BC clearing pass was intercepted and Mackenzie Pluck was able to beat Kayla Duran and put it just under Alexis Bryant’s arms. Duke’s game winner came from Kayla McCoy at 84:28, just getting by Bryant after a redirection from Duran’s sliding block. The Blue Devils outshot the BC fifteen to eight in the match, and put six shots on goal.
BC falls to fifth in the ACC standings with the pair of road losses this week, leaving them at 5-3-1 in the conference. They will return to Chestnut Hill and try to regroup with a much needed home game against Pitt on Thursday night to wrap up the regular season. BC will hope for a win and a Louisville or Virginia loss this week to edge them back up into the top four in the standings, which would earn them a first round home game in the ACC tournament.
