The Book 2017: Final Poll

Bama claims the top spot, Eagles at #42

The 2017 season ended the same way it was predicted to end by many, with Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide, hoisting the CFP Championship trophy, following their 26-23 overtime win over SEC rival Georgia.

The Book (using the Phil Steele pre-season ratings), had the Tide picked when we started and was #1 in our power rankings for 11 of the 18 weeks of the season, with only Oklahoma (2 weeks) and Ohio State (5 weeks) holding that rating besides Bama.

In terms of Boston College, the Eagles finished #42 in our poll. #9 in the ACC. BC was as low as #80 in the power poll entering week 5 (September 30) and rose as high as #36 in the power poll. The Eagles benefited from a strong strength of schedule in the combined poll (#12 overall).

BC actually got move love from other computer polls, finishing 36th with Jeff Sagarin and 34th overall with the Massey composite. The Book was on the Eagle bandwagon early, but then backed off the last few weeks, while others picked up the steam.

Against Vegas, we did pretty well, finishing at .507 for the season vs the line and .729 picking games straight up. This would put The Book #24 vs the spread and #18 straight up against 61 various computer polls documented by The Prediction Tracker. Certainly a solid season.

So what’s next?

In the off season, I always work on tweaking something and this will be the most ambitious one yet for sure (let’s see if I will actually do it!) and that’s creating my own pre-season ratings. What I have found out through the years is that where you start, is the single most important factor as to where you finish, so I’ve got a lot of leg work in front of me prior to next August.

I hope you got some enjoyment from The Book, as most of you know, this is my pet project, so something that gives me a lot of pleasure to do.
