The Book 2017: Week 4

Big week 3 vs Vegas spread. Eagles massive dog at Clemson

It certainly wasn’t a great week for the Boston College football team, but the same can’t be said about The Book, where we feasted on Vegas odds. The games of week three were the most successful of the season to date and one of the more successful in the past couple of years, hopefully showing the alterations made for 2017 were smart ones.

The Book went 32-17-1 for a .650 winning percentage last week, good enough to raise the year to date percentage up to .550 (75-61-3). As far as straight winners are concerned, the more conference games, the tougher the sledding goes, but we did well there too, going 40-11 and now .809 for the season.

According to Prediction Tracker, that puts us tied for #2 in straight up winners and now all the way up to #13 against the spread, on the season against the 54 computer polls listed. Great start to 2017.

As far as picking BC games are concerned, The Book remained perfect on the season, 3-0 straight up and vs Vegas.

For the second consecutive week, USC takes the top spot in the Strength of Record poll, with Clemson at #2, Alabama #3 and Michigan #4. The week’s big winner was San Diego State, who rose all the way to #6 after upsetting Stanford.

We still have a fair number of odd undefeateds at the top of the rankings, but every week it gets closer to the Power Ranking numbers, which more match what you view every week with Sagarin or choose your method.

There are also the Florida teams (FSU and Miami) who look to be at least upper tier players in the picture who are quite low right now, just because they’ve only played one game. That will normalize over the next few weeks.

As for BC, despite the blow out loss, it didn’t hurt too much in terms of the SOR because Notre Dame is strong in the Power Rankings. The Eagles fell to #69 in the SOR, #85 in the Power Rankings and #63 in the combined rankings.

Sagarin has BC at #88 and the Massey rankings through Monday afternoon, have them at #84. Interesting in that if you go to the Massey rankings and click on Boston College it takes you to their team prediction page, where the Eagles are still favorites in four more games this season. Massey has BC beating Central Michigan (79% chance), Virginia (53%), UConn (88%) and yes, at Syracuse (51%).

This week though looks to be a rough one, with Boston College travelling to attacking National Champion Clemson. Early spreads show the Tigers a 32 12 point favorite, but The Book doesn’t think that’s big enough, with Clemson a 35.3 point pick over the Eagles. Yikes!!

Enjoy the games and Go Eagles!
