We’ve reached our first Finn of the 2017-18 roster! (Don’t forget to check out our Finnish Hockey Dictionary before the season.)
Name: Jesper Mattila
Number: 8
Position: Defense
Class Year: Sophomore
Background: Mattila played in 34 games for BC last season and showed himself to be a solid defenseman with the ability to contribute on both sides of the ice. He is the type of player who will continue to improve and should be an impact player and a leader by his senior season. Mattila picked up 9 points as a freshman, including 2 goals. He also played for Finland’s U-20 team.
2017-18 Outlook: Mattila should see a lot of ice time this season. I would expect him to find himself on the second defensive pairing. Mattila has a hard shot and will likely be called upon to take advantage of scoring opportunities this year considering how much scoring talent the team has lost. Now that he has had a year to adjust to playing in the NCAA and living in the US, Mattila should be a stronger player than he was as a rookie.
Fun Fact: Jesper assisted on twin brother Julius’s goal on March 17 against BU last season.
