The Book 2017: Week 1

Eagles 4 point favorites at NIU

After a mini morsel appetizer in what apparently, college football called, Week 0, the season opens for the entire nation this week, with a veritable smorgasbord of games starting on Thursday and running all the way through the Labor Day weekend, closing with Georgia Tech-Tennessee on Monday night.

Included in these are a lot of FBS-FCS dogs, but also some very compelling games too, such as Florida State-Alabama, Michigan-Florida, UCLA-Texas A&M and West Virginia-Virginia Tech. All but one of those games (Bruins-Aggies) at neutral sites.

BC opens on Friday night (9:30 PM EDT, CBS Sports Network) at perennial MAC powerhouse, Northern Illinois, in a tilt that most Eagle fans realize this team needs to get to reach a goal of another bowl come December.

The Book (well for the sake of opening week, we might as well say Phil Steele), is actually pretty bullish on both teams and although neither are expected to be great, both are projected to be bowl teams, with NIU grabbing one of Steele’s coveted “Most Improved” spots.

That said, BC is a 4 point favorite, so the Book likes the Eagles to cover as well.

The week’s biggest game pits #1 Alabama against national and Book #3 Florida State, at the gorgeous new Mercedes Benz Stadium. The Book likes the Noles to cover the 7.5 but has the Tide to win the game as a 1.9 point favorite.

With only a handful of teams playing last week, we won’t post a new poll, that will come out next week after all teams have gotten on the field and will be based on the current strength of record, which is what we used last season. Who you beat and where they are ranked at the current time.

Check out the spreads for the week below.
