It’s game week.
Once more, for the people in the back: IT’S GAME WEEK!
With a difficult schedule on tap for this season, Boston College’s first game is of critical importance. The Friday night trip to Northern Illinois (9 PM, CBS Sports Network) has the potential to be tricky, but BC can’t afford a slip-up.
Vegas gives BC the slight edge in this matchup, with most books currently favoring the Eagles by 3 points. Northern Illinois had opened as a two point favorite earlier this summer, but the storylines around BC this summer have been pretty positive, perhaps pushing the line in their direction.
It's also noteworthy that the over-under is set at 47.5, which would be a pretty high scoring game by BC standards in recent years. Northern Illinois scored 28 or more points in each of their last 7 games down the stretch last season. They also finished off the year 4-1 in their last 5, posting 30+ points four times.
ESPN’s Football Power Index also pegs BC as a slight favorite. Northern Illinois is #100 by their methodology, while BC is #67. BC is projected to have a 65.3% chance of victory on Friday night. As slight favorites in each of their first two games, BC will need to start strong.
With the season getting underway, there are still so many unknowns about this BC team - not the least of being who will end up taking the reins as QB. Was the offense that moved the ball up and down the field against Maryland in the Quick Lane Bowl a good representation of what we’ll see this year? Or will things revert to how they looked for much of last season, when BC struggled once again to move the ball?
We start getting the answers on Friday night. Happy game week!
