Yesterday, we awarded our first 2017 “Fan Favorite” honor to Kali Flanagan. Today’s honor, also for the 2017 BCI Fan Favorite Award, goes to Jesper and Julius Mattila. Yes, they are two separate people but we make the rules so we’re awarding it to both of them. The Mattilas beat out Ky Bowman, Myles Willis, and teammate Matty Gaudreau for the award.
If you’ve been to a hockey game with any member of BCI this past year, you know that we got very into Finland. Some of us have been there and loved it, some of us just needed something fun to cheer for, and all of us were excited about the fact that BC is apparently the new premiere NCAA destination for Finnish hockey players. And the Mattilas were good sports about all of our typical, over-the-top BCI support.
The fact that they are both good players certainly helps too, particularly since they are the type of players that should continue to improve and contribute more every year. Julius had 8 goals and 8 assists in 30 games for BC this past season and was second amongst BC freshman in goals and points. Jesper, a defender, picked up 9 points during his rookie season and should be a core member of the Eagles’ defense in 2017-18. Both brothers also played for Finland in the WJC in January.
Hyvä työ, kaverit!
