On Monday at 11:30 AM ET, USA Hockey will announce the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2017. The class of 2017 will be the 43rd class, and its honorees will join 172 previous inductees. This year, there is one name that should without a doubt be on the list - Jerry York. Yes, you read that right - Jerry York is not currently in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
Coach York is the winningest coach in college hockey (active or retired) with 1,033 career wins from his time at Clarkson (125), Bowling Green (342), and Boston College (566). He is the first and only NCAA hockey coach to reach 1,000 career wins and is also BC hockey’s winningest coach. York’s 5 NCAA Championships as a coach (4 at BC and 1 at Bowling Green) have him tied for second place in NCAA history.
Coach York was inducted into the Bowling Green State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1982. His Boston College jersey was retired by the school in 2010. He was the winner of the Spencer Penrose Award (top NCAA D1 hockey coach) in 1977, was the CCHA Coach of the Year in 1981, and is a 3 time winner of Hockey East’s Bob Kullen Coach of the Year Award. In 2010, York was honored with the Lester Patrick Trophy, presented for outstanding service to hockey in the United States.
In addition to being the winningest coach in college hockey, Coach York is highly respected by everyone that knows him and by the entire hockey community. He deserves to be in the US Hockey Hall of Fame (and the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto), for his professional accomplishments, but the fact that he is such a well-loved and respected coach makes it all the more shocking that he isn’t yet.
So make sure to head over to USHockeyHallofFame.com on Monday and hope that they announce that Coach York will finally be receiving the honor he deserves.
