The news around Boston College’s AD search has been quiet. There have been rumored finalists, rumored announce dates, but nothing in stone. Last night we got our first real piece of news, as VCU AD Ed McLaughlin removed his name from consideration for the BC AD position. The news came after McLaughlin received a new contract extension that will keep him as VCU’s AD through 2024.
The Natick, MA native has been with VCU since 2012, before that he was the AD at Niagara. He graduated from Boston College from 1995, where he was the sports editor of the campus paper The Heights. He also has experience in the college hockey realm as he was in charge of the media relations for Hockey East.
Many felt that McLaughlin would have been a good fit at Boston College. His experience and record with college basketball were all positives, has hockey background, and has done a nice job with fund raising at VCU. However, his lack of football background at a FBS school raises some questions on that front.
It’s hard to say whether the news on McLaughlin is a good thing or a bad thing. In the end it will depend on who BC hires to be their next AD. He wouldn’t have been a “splash” hire, but there are certainly worse candidates.
We will keep you up to date on any news that breaks on the AD search.
