The various conference title games yesterday are finished, and with it come a new string of projections for the bowl games. There are various reports out there on where Boston College is heading, but let’s start with the bad news:
If Ohio State is the No. 4 seed, Alabama will be in the Orange Bowl and the ACC will not get the extra spot in the Citrus Bowl
— Joe Giglio (@jwgiglio) December 3, 2017
Can you guess which team would most likely get knocked out of the ACC pecking order? If I were a betting man, I would bet on BC. Remember the way the bowls work, BC can be jumped by any team within one win of them, which basically means every bowl eligible team in the ACC can jump them. This makes the loss to N.C. State even more brutal than it already was.
If this is the case, BC will probably end up in the Gasparilla Bowl in St. Pete’s or Birmingham Bowl both before Christmas. Oof. Let’s hope there is a bowl that wants that coveted Boston/NYC market.
SBNation
Pinstripe Bowl: Boston College vs. Northwestern.
AJ’s Take: I am all for this, as long as we can rename it the Brian Favat Bowl. But in all honesty, this would be a great draw for the Eagles.
CBS
Birmingham Bowl: Boston College vs. Utah (December 23)
AJ’s Take: Here is our first non-ACC Bowl lineup projection, and honestly I don’t hate it. It’s a Power 5 school, so I can’t complain. The date is awful though.
ESPN
Both writer’s have the Birmingham Bowl
Bonagura: Boston College vs. Houston
Hale: Boston College vs. Akron
AJ’s Take: Houston? Meh. Akron?
College Football Talk
Pinstripe Bowl: Boston College vs. Iowa
AJ’s Take: This hits all the marks we want. Local, great opponent who would be a lot of fun to match up against. Gimme, gimme.
Sports Illustrated
Sun Bowl: Boston College vs. Arizona State
AJ’s Take: Another great option, this would be the first time BC ever played in this bowl, one of the oldest bowls of all time. Plus the locals pack the bowl, so even if we don’t travel, there will be a crowd.
USA Today
Pinstripe Bowl: Boston College vs. Purdue
AJ’s Take: Yes, I’ll take this one. Sets up nicely next year’s first matchup between these schools, and I’d love to see what Jeff Brohm has done with the Boilermakers up to this point.
My final guess: Call me a Debbie Downer, but I have a feeling BC fans are going to be disappointed with the bowl. I think Ohio State is going to make it into the playoffs, Alabama is going to get the Citrus Bowl, and push the ACC schools down the pecking order. This will force BC into some pre-Christmas bowl against a MAC/Conference USA team that won’t move the needle. But I could be wrong. Please say that I am wrong.
