Those are probably the words most Boston College fans will remember from the Eagles' 23-10 loss at home against Virginia Tech, uttered by a tired and clearly frustrated Steve Addazio.
"You can write that one down, okay? I don't have the time clock on it right here, but it'll come together, and it'll be beautiful, all right. And the investment is worth it."
Perhaps the BC coach was trying to convince a fan base that has largely turned on him that better times are coming, or maybe he was delivering a message to his team. Heck, maybe he was just trying to convince himself.
Either way, Addazio, the Eagles, and BC fans everywhere leave another game still waiting for it to come together for this team. It was another night of missed opportunities, dropped passes, and inconsistent offensive play, while the defense did its best to keep BC within striking distance.
It's a script that Boston College fans have seen play out countless times over the past few years, and every time it feels like the Eagles are THIS close to putting it all together.
But we just haven't seen it, at least not against top level competition.
Nobody can argue that BC has faced a tough slate so far, battling three different Top 25 opponents in Virginia Tech, Clemson and Notre Dame, and yes, the Eagles are breaking in a redshirt freshman quarterback in Anthony Brown. But the BC fan base has run out of patience for growing pains, and unless the Eagles plan on changing conferences sometime soon, the schedule isn't getting any easier.
Nobody can question that Steve Addazio is a hard worker, that he does things the right way, that his players would run through a wall for him, or that he loves his team, but none of those are the issue at hand right now.
If Addazio hopes to return to the Heights next season, he will need to lead yet another turnaround - one even more impressive than last year’s home stretch - starting with a trip to Louisville next week. It won’t be easy, but the Eagles and their coach certainly aren’t done fighting.
