Boston College vs. Virginia Tech: Final Thoughts And Predictions

What are we predicting

NCAA Football: Central Michigan at Boston College Brian Fluharty-USA TODAY Sports

Last week wasn’t a particularly interesting game, but the Boston College Eagles got back in the win column with a much needed 28-8 win over the Central Michigan Chippewas. There isn’t time to celebrate though, as #16 Virginia Tech Hokies come to Alumni Stadium to take on the Eagles. If you haven’t already blocked it out of your mind, BC got pummeled by the Hokies last year 49-0 in Blacksburg, a game that was over pretty much from the start. The Eagles are going to need to play the game of the year if they want to take out Justin Fuentes team, can they do it?

Keys To Victory

  1. Third Downs on both sides of the ball: This has to be a key for BC to improve upon, on offense the Eagles are 105th in the country in 3rd down conversions, converting just over 30% of them. On defense they aren’t much better, ranked 73rd in the country and holding opponents to a 38% clip. BC needs to keep their drives sustained, and they need their defense to get off the field, improving on third down would be a start.
  2. Longer Passes: BC is 129th in the country in yards per pass attempt (only ahead of Army), only averaging 4.5 yards per pass attempt. They have to take more chances further down the field. These little dump off passes, and two yard pass attempts are going to get them no where. This isn’t just on the play calling either, the wide receivers need to do a better job getting open as well.
  3. Win The Turnover Battle: One of the reasons BC kept with the Clemson Tigers two weeks ago was the turnovers. BC has some playmakers in Harold Landry and Lukas Denis to get the ball back. They have to make some plays, and Anthony Brown can’t make any huge errors that pins the defense deep
  4. Get Momentum Quick: It’s a Saturday evening game, Alumni Stadium should be rocking. Get on the board quickly with a touchdown, get the fans behind you and keep the noise going. The worst thing that could happen is VT goes out and scores 14 points in like five minutes, and the crowd is dead. Can’t let that happen.
  5. Michael Walker For Heisman: Easily the MVP from last week’s game, he needs to keep it up on special teams.

My Non-IPA Beer of the Week:

Cape Ann Brewery: Pumpkin Stout. I am not the biggest fan of pumpkin beer, in fact most of it is rubbish. Pumpkinhead by Shipyard, while a nice nostalgic beer, is basically Bud Light with a packet of pumpkin spice in it. However, Cape Ann made a fantastic stout that is perfectly done, just a hint of pumpkin, while the stout recipe itself is fantastic. Might be hard to find, but this is a must have for the season.

Absolutely Necessary Rap Song Of The Week

Big Pun: 100%. Two reasons this song choice was added, one after the horrible disaster in Puerto Rico, I wanted to choose a rapper with his roots from the island. Secondly, at 100% is what BC is going to have play like if they want to win on Saturday evening.

AJ’s Power of Positivity Thought Of The Week:

Michael Walker, could be one of the top kick returners in the game today. How long has it been since BC has had a returner like MW? The original Jeff Smith? It’s been a lot of fun watching him do what he does every kickoff and punt.

Pregame Food Of The Week-

BC is playing the Hokies, this food seems pretty appropriate no? I know it’s not November, but a nice night game, grab some sub rolls, stuffing and make a killer sandwich. However, I’m sure for some reason that deep fryers are illegal on campus, so I don’t know why I chose this.

Predictions (AJ jumps back into the game, with his second win, only missing last week’s score by 2 points).

Coach JF (3): No Prediction

AJ Black (2): 38-3 VT. Yeah, this isn’t going to be pretty

Matt O (1): 17-10 BC

.Grant: BC 17 VT 14 TOOT TOOT POSITIVITY TRAIN

Arthur B: 38-10 Hokies

Eric H: No Prediction

Laura B:

Michael Gualtieri: 24-21 BC wins a close one!

Patrick T: 42-10 VT

BC Superfan Thermometer: 5/10

The game may be a snoozer, but at least night time games are fun right?
