Freshman Cayla Barnes has been selected to join the U.S. Women’s National Team and has announced this afternoon that she will withdraw from Boston College and restart her freshman year in August 2018. While exciting news for Barnes and the program, this marks the third active player taking time off this season to play for Team USA as they prepare for Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. It is currently unclear is Barnes is replacing someone on the roster.
The freshman defender played in the Eagles’ first 5 games this season, aiding a team whose top 2 defenders have already been called up for to the Team USA. Though the loss will have immediate repercussions for the Eagles, the team can look ahead to the 2018-2019 season when they will feature 3 national team- caliber players on defense.
