We hit the last football weekend in October, Steve Addazio appears to be turning the fortunes of the Boston College Eagles. There is a lot of talk that The Dazzler has made a habit of doing this in his tenure here, but there really isn’t a ton of proof at least until this season, that it might be the case. In the second half of his three years, BC has gone 4-3, 3-4, 0-6 and 4-3.

One thing’s for sure though and that is The Book has noticed!

Boston College continues on the rise again this week, up to #39 in our combined poll, #55 in the Power ratings and #42 in the Strength of Record ratings. As it has been all season, the Eagles are benefiting from playing what we still view as the nation’s #1 schedule.

It’s been brought up that we might be off in our calculations and perhaps it’s just a product of the math, but the Team Rankings web site lists them at #10 and Jeff Sagarin has them at #4, so whatever way you slice it BC hasn’t had an easy path.

This week is curious due to the opponent, that being Florida State. We discussed this last week, but FSU, Kansas St and Baylor in particular have records below what their pre-season expectations and therefore power rankings indicated. While the strength of record poll will have these teams drop off a cliff (FSU #74, Kansas State #82 and Baylor #123), the power rankings which we base our weekly point spreads on, have a maximum gain/loss on a weekly basis that means if you were supposed to be good or bad, it takes a while to change that.

With the Seminoles, it’s been a case of them being favored in every game but Alabama and in many cases by far more than Vegas put down and understandably so. Even now at 2-4 the Noles are still at #21 in our power rating, #22 in Sagarin and #42 with Massey.

The Sagarin poll plays much more closely to our power rankings, while the Massey closer to our composite.

As it’s done all season, The Book like Florida State and gladly gives the 3 12 points, with FSU an 8.8 point choice.

By the way, Sagarin likes Florida State by nearly the same margin, 8.2 points.

In terms of how we are doing against the big boys, the Book had it’s first sub .500 week in quite some time, but only one game under. Currently #15 against the spread and #11 straight up according to Prediction Tracker among 57 polls.

Maybe most impressively and most importantly for Eagle fans, the Book is now 7-1 against Vegas and 6-2 straight up, picking BC games.

Next week, we will focus a bit more on the national scene as the first College Football Playoff Rankings will be released and we can compare The Book to the committee.

Enjoy the games and Go Eagles!
