Boston College had their second straight statement game on Saturday, going to Charlottesville and systematically destroying the Cavaliers 41-10. It was all Eagles as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a long drive that was capped by a 30 yard field goal by Colton Lichtenberg. After a succession of stops, the explosive plays were back this time with a 76 yard jet sweep by Thadd Smith, followed by a huge 75 yard pass to Kobay White and finally a beautiful pass to Tommy Sweeney. Heading to halftime the Eagles had a 24-7 lead over UVA, with the Cavs scoring a last minute touchdown from Kurt Benkert to Joey Reed.
The second half was even more lopsided as BC scored another touchdown on a pass from Anthony Brown to Sweeney, a field goal by Lichtenberg and sealed with a pick six by John Lamot. Will Harris also had a huge game with an interception and a sack. BC again had over 500 yards of offense, with Brown throwing for 275 yards and three touchdowns. BC finished the game 10/18 on third down conversions. The BC defense held UVA to 243 yards, and their vaunted pass game was completely shut down by a vicious pass rush and solid secondary play.
Where has this team been? A major hat tip to all the coaches, and especially Scot Loeffler who had an inspired game plan, as BC had a very good UVA defense confused for most of the game. They called flea flickers, jet sweeps, and a beautiful screen pass that led to a Kobay White touchdown. They were dominant on both sides of the ball, as they head back to Chestnut Hill for a Friday night matchup against FSU (who just lost to Louisville).
Steve Addazio is 2-0 since the “it’s going to come together, and it’s going to be beautiful” comment. Just sayin’.
