Boston College vs. Virginia: Final Thoughts And Predictions

NCAA Football: Virginia at Boise State Brian Losness-USA TODAY Sports

Let me just start off this post by saying that I was wrong about last week’s game. Oh I was wrong and it was glorious! To be fair most of us were dead wrong. But Boston College showed us something last week, they showed that they were a team that isn’t dead yet, and still has fight in them. This week they take on the upstart Virginia Cavaliers, a team that is 5-1 and can be bowl eligible with a win over the Eagles. They have an excellent quarterback in Kurt Benkert and one of the better defenses in the ACC. This game is absolutely huge for Steve Addazio, and his future with Boston College. A win and all of a 5-7 or 6-6 looks much more manageable. A loss? We are back where we were before the Louisville win. BC has to take care of business this week and build on last week’s win. The million dollar question is, can they do it?

Keys To Victory

  1. POUND THE ROCK: I joked about this last week on Twitter when Addazio came out after halftime and said that would be the key to the second half. He was right, and I was wrong. Sorry Jon Hilliman, but this is A.J. Dillon’s team now, he needs to smash that front line and take advantage of the much improved play by the line especially Chris Lindstrom and John Phillips. A heavy dose of Dillon can be soul crushing, and basically force defenses to hesitate on tackles, UVA is a much much better defense, but BC is going to have to take it to them.
  2. Play Action And Tight End Play: Tommy Sweeney was basically invisible for the first five games, and last game he became the tight end we all thought he could be. He is the perfect play action target that will keep defenses honest. Use him, target him, and target him often.
  3. Get To Benkert: UVA quarterback Kurt Benkert has put together an impressive start to his season, but he is missing one of the weapons that usually kills BC. His legs. He is a pocket passer, which should be a great sign for Harold Landry and Zach Allen. If BC can break down the UVA offensive line, they should get home for some big plays.
  4. No Coaching Brain Farts: UVA is a much better team and won’t lay down like Louisville did last week. Even with the Cardinals basically conceding every A.J. Dillon run, Addazio let them right back into the game with some very questionable calls late. He can’t do that against UVA, just like the team has to play 60 minutes, he needs to coach for 60 minutes.
  5. Prevent The Long Plays: BC has been killed by the long play (118th in the country), they can not allow UVA to get multiple chunk plays. The Eagles are allowing an average of 3 30+ yard plays per game. Can’t have that happen again.

My Non-IPA Beer of the Week:

Castle Island: Festbier. Continuing the Oktoberfest theme, Castle Island is a relatively new brewery based out of Norwood MA. I tried some of their beers at a Boston bar recently, their IPA and Lager are outstanding, and the Oktoberfest was fantastic as well. Served only in pint cans and draughts, it’s well worth sampling if you get a chance.

Absolutely Necessary Rap Song Of The Week

Eminem - I’m Back. After year’s of trying to find themselves, BC is back to where they started. A physical smash mouth football team, similar to the one that Addazio had success with in 2013. Now don’t call this a comeback yet, this is just a one game sample, it’s not a trend yet. But let’s hope that indeed they are back.

AJ’s Power of Positivity Thought Of The Week:

Pregame Food Of The Week-

Cider Donuts. Last week it was the maple glazed bacon donuts, hell let’s continue to clog our arteries with the good stuff. I’m not talking about the cider donuts you get at Dunkins or at a grocery store. These are the donuts you get at an orchard, freshly made and warm. Question: What are the most warm cider donuts you have eaten in a single sitting?

Prediction Thread: We all chose Louisville last week, but only Mike G picked BC to keep it close so he get’s the point. Arthur get’s the other point for predicting Lamar Jackson to have 500 yards (he had 512)

Coach JF (4): BC 24 Virginia 20. Live from Charlottesville the Eagles beat a slightly overrated Cavalier team

AJ Black (2): UVA 20 BC 17 - I picked Louisville last week, and then got skewered by Cold Takes Exposed (which was awesome BTW), so let’s keep that streak going.

Michael Gualtieri (1): BC sneaks one out, 35-28 and gets ready for the next three games in Boston!

Matt O (1): BC 24-13. UVA learns the hard way you can't just arm tackle AJ Dillon

Arthur B (1): BC 28 UVA 24

Grant: BC 21 UVA 14 SOUNDS LIKE SOME BS TO ME

Eric H: Virginia 34 BC 27

Laura B:

Patrick T: Oh man I have no idea after last week. Does BC put up 45 again? Does UVA have anyone that can tackle better than Louisivlle? Is momentum a thing? Let's check the random number generator 0-45 for both teams. BC 27 UVA 25 .That's a lot of field goals and a missed extra point for UVA. Go Eagles

BC Superfan Thermometer: 8/10

Let’s do this. Another big win for the Eagles will be huge, and lead up to what could be a massive game against FSU next Friday!
