The votes are in and based on your decision, the Combined Ranking will now be the rating of record for The Book.

What is the Combined Ranking?

It is a combination of our three ways of evaluating teams. 1) a power rating component accounting for 50%, 2) a Strength of Record component, counting for 40% and 3) a Strength of Schedule component, counting for 10%.

Each team is measured by percentage against the top team in that rating system and then the three are combined based on the weighted percentage we just discussed.

(If anyone wants me to spell out the formula, just let me know, will do it in the next post!)

Not surprisingly, Alabama has now taken over the top spot in the rankings and pretty substantially over #2 Georgia. USC and Clemson are three and four. I know that will make some people question the validity of the poll, but they are beneficiary of who that record was run up against, while Penn State and TCU haven’t played nearly as strong an overall schedule.

In general, although there are some exceptions, the rankings systems are beginning to converge and become more consistent. The combined, power and strength of record, along with the other computer systems (Sagarin and Massey), are looking more and more alike each week.

BC continues a slow, steady march up the rankings, now in at #55, not too far off from where both Sagarin and Massey have them. The Eagles are a scant 5.9 point underdog this week in Charlottesville against Virginia, looking to even their record on the season.

Against the Vegas spread, another unremarkable, but amazingly consistent .500 week at exactly 29-29-1. This marks three weeks in the last four where we’ve been exactly at 50%, with the other week, just one game over.

According to Prediction Tracker, we stay at #7 out of now 57 in picking winners straight up and #16 against the Wise Guys on the Strip.
