Boston College Women’s Soccer Falls to North Carolina 4-1

Eagles Can’t Hold Off No. 5 Tar Heels

The Eagles women’s soccer team took the field Saturday night in Newton hoping to upset No. 5 ranked North Carolina (10-2-0) and fighting for an ACC playoff spot. Coming off a strong road win against Miami last weekend, the Eagles hoped to continue their momentum with only four games left on the season.

The Eagles’ defense was busy with the Tar Heels controlling the attack early. Alessia Russo put Carolina on the board with a long goal from near midfield within the first 5 minutes of play. Forward Andrzejewski headed in a corner kick in the 9th minute to put the Tar Heels up 2-0. Offensive opportunities for the Eagles were few and far between in the first half, but strong defensive play lead to more opportunities as the half wound down. With 3 minutes remaining in the first half, the Tar Heels added another goal by Jessie Scarpa off a blocked shot to go up 3-0.

BC turned up the pressure in the second half, leading to a few chances which the Eagles were unable to convert. Andrzejewski scored again on a cross in the 77th minute to put the Tar Heels up 4-0. Carly Leipzig countered with a 82nd minute goal to avoid the shutout and propel the Eagles into their next matchup.

This homestand will continue to challenge the Eagles with ACC-leading No. 4 Duke coming to Newton on Thursday for a 7 PM match, and No. 25 Virginia in town for a 1 PM game on Sunday.
