The Boston College Eagles shocked the college basketball world Sunday afternoon, not just by virtue of defeating the Syracuse Orange, but the circumstances in which the defeat happened.
For one thing, the Eagles dominated the game, never trailing. The game wasn’t even tied past 10-10.
For another, this was supposed to be a good Syracuse team, a team that Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said was the “best team [they’ve] had in a long time.”
Finally, it was a victory that snapped a 664 day losing streak in-conference for the Boston College Eagles.
Because this was a special game, we believe that it deserves special attention. That is why we have decided to do a special basketball edition of the Tweetcap, to look back on the day that was New Year’s Day, 2017, the day the Boston College Eagles snapped a historic losing streak.
We hope you enjoy looking back on the win.
Hey everyone. It’s basketball day. BC takes on Syracuse at Conte Forum to open ACC play.

I like BC getting 10 at home against Cuse. Seems like a bad spot for Cuse

Syracuse wins the tip. A very pleasant good afternoon to you all.

Eagles up at the first media timeout of the game with 14:38 left in the first. 10-7 the score. BC has already forced three turnovers.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
Just under 6 minutes in, Eagles have the 10-7 lead. Tava has 4 boars, Bowman aggressive early, has 4 pts. #BConWZBC
— WZBC Sports (@WZBCSports) January 1, 2017
@WZBCSports boars? pic.twitter.com/mHP7sGoG0t
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
@arthurbailin it's an underrated statistic that gets overlooked.
— WZBC Sports (@WZBCSports) January 1, 2017
Also, off a 6-0 run, Syracuse has tied the game at 10.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
Watching my first @BCMBB game of the season. They look...competent? @bcinterruption
— Conrad Kaczmarek (@ConradKaz) January 1, 2017
Syracuse calls timeout, and the Eagles are flying. 22-14, BC has made seven of its last seven from the field. 11:08 left in the first.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
BC handling the Cuse zone well right now. Doesnt say much for the Cuse D tho. BC has struggled against zones this year a few times
— ERIC HOFFSES (@EJHoffses) January 1, 2017
Bowman in particular is penetrating well. https://t.co/7q6HqcacD9
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
Eagles had a 10 point lead, but Lydon draws an and-one foul. which he does not convert.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
@arthurbailin things looking good for a possible ACC win?

That’s the half. BC is up eleven points. Eleven points. 44-33 at the half.

Welcome back to the game. The second half starts with Syracuse possessing the ball.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
BC is up 15. Everyone try to stay calm.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
Tyler Lydon has been a complete no show for Cuse so far
— ERIC HOFFSES (@EJHoffses) January 1, 2017
You can say the same thing about anyone not named White III, Thompson and Roberson. https://t.co/xrZP0j83D5
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
My word, how can you leave Bowman open like that. He hits a trey with half of Syracuse’s defense in Brookline.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
guys, I'm really starting to think that Syracuse just isn't a very good basketball team https://t.co/b3XjeBWjp9
— GABAttack (@GABAttack) January 1, 2017
I mean. This is a blowout. BC blowing out Syracuse. In basketball. Like right now.

BC is up by 21 points. Just like everyone predicted.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
Lots of amazing going on but Cuse not being able to cut the BC lead down with Bowman on bench is up there
— ERIC HOFFSES (@EJHoffses) January 1, 2017
Smithers, I’m beginning to think that the Syracuse Orange are not the brilliant tacticians I thought they were. pic.twitter.com/kEq2A7Rkh6
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
Syracuse basketball is getting ROCKED by Boston College. This is a real tweet in 2017.
— Adam Kaufman (@AdamMKaufman) January 1, 2017
And again I repeat that watching this game, it should NOT be a surprise. https://t.co/fSeXnThUyh
— Dan Rubin (@BCDanRubin) January 1, 2017
Yes, it should be. We knew that BC was capable of this, but actually doing this, and to this degree, is surprising. https://t.co/G3uKRYL58H
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
Bowman. Can’t. Miss. 26 points.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
.@BCMBB do the scoreboards in Conte go to triple digits? Just wondering.

— Lauren Brownlow (@lebrownlow) January 1, 2017
Bowman scores. This is a scheduled tweet.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
Syracuse is playing man-to-man defense. That is all.
— Mike Waters (@MikeWatersSYR) January 1, 2017
I don't believe this. Mainly because it implies Syracuse is playing defense. https://t.co/Sg32JDZ8kE
— Mark Ennis (@MarkEnnis) January 1, 2017
Last minute. Get ready to party.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
The Curse is Over! BC defeats Syracuse 96-81.
— Arthur Bailin (@arthurbailin) January 1, 2017
-Better ACC record than Duke, UNC, and Louisville
— Michael Sullivan (@MichaelJSully) January 1, 2017
-BC undefeated in 2017
-@BCMBB & @BCFootball 2-0 in the ACC since @RileyHeights took over. https://t.co/xPocI9od7N
Everyone is going to freak out over #Cuse getting blow-out -- instead pay attention to BC. Jim Christian's team beat PC,Auburn now Cuse
— Doug Gottlieb (@GottliebShow) January 1, 2017
Boston College 96, Syracuse 81. Speechless. Orange have been mess this season. Usually not a good sign when have to add pair 5th year guys.
— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) January 1, 2017
Did Syracuse really just lose by 15 at Boston College? Sheesh!
— Seth Davis (@SethDavisHoops) January 1, 2017
BC puts up 96 in a 15-point win over Syracuse. The Eagles already have more ACC wins than last season. Playing well under Jim Christian.
