Casey Fitzgerald Drafted by Buffalo Sabres in 3rd Round

Fitzgerald was drafted 86th overall following a solid freshman season.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Casey Fitzgerald was selected 86th overall by Buffalo in this weekend's NHL Draft. Fitzgerald went un-drafted last year, but had an impressive freshman season for the Eagles.

As a freshman, Fitzgerald impressed with his quick adjustment to the college game. He scored 4 goals and recorded 23 assists. He was tied for 4th on the Eagles in assists - his brother, Ryan, also had 23. Fitzgerald also had a +/- of +27. Fitzgerald should be an even more important member of BC's defense next season following a summer of departures for BC. The Eagles will call on him to step up and take a leadership role over the young defensive corps.

Casey's brother, Ryan, a forward at BC, was drafted by the Bruins in 2013.

Fitzgerald joins BC legend Brian Gionta in the Sabres organization (although Gionta may be retired by the time Fitzgerald reaches the NHL).

Congrats to Casey on being drafted - it was well deserved after a season of hard work!
