Boston College hockey has struggled when playing in Maine in past years, but the Eagles skated away with two wins this weekend. Saturday's 3-2 win in Orono was the Eagles first victory at Alfond since 2012.
On Friday night, BC played the Black Bears in Portland. It initially appeared that the game would be a close one, as the teams went into the second period tied at 1. Despite letting Maine score first, BC ran away with the game, scoring 6 unanswered goals for a final score of 6-1.
Austin Cangelosi recorded a natural hat trick with the first 3 BC goals, with the remaining 3 goals coming from Chris Calnan, David Cotton, and Ryan Fitzgerald.
Freshmen accounted for 5 of BC's 18 points on Friday (1 G, 4 A) and Joe Woll had an impressive outing in net, stopping 21 shots.
Saturday night's game in Orono was closer and tougher, as expected. BC went into the second period up 1-0 thanks to Ron Greco's second goal of the season. Scott Savage put BC up 2-0 halfway through the second, but Maine cut the lead back to 1 towards the end of the period. Mike Booth scored a terrific goal (the game-winner) to put BC up 3-1, but Maine picked up another goal just over a minute later. The Eagles fought off serious pressure from Maine in the third to hang on and win the game.
Woll made 28 saves in Saturday's game, and the entire freshman class continued to contribute a lot. BC has had a fairly easy schedule so far, but it has been good to see that everyone on the team is contributing to offense.
The Eagles now hold the longest unbeaten streak in the NCAA this season, having gone 7-0-1 in their last 8 games.
BC plays again on Tuesday night when they take on UNH at Conte.
