Next week, the Boston Red Sox will entertain the Boston College Eagles in their annual exhibition game as part of the kickoff to the 2015 Major League Baseball spring training season.
When the teams meet, the Eagles will don special edition uniforms in honor of Pete Frates, the former baseball captain battling Lou Gehrig's Disease. The uniforms are replicas of the jerseys worn by the team during Frates' senior season in 2007. All uniforms are adorned with Frates' last name and the familiar #3 on the back of the jersey.
The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game online to benefit the Pete Frates #3 Fund. The Fund helps subsidize medical care and expenses outside of health insurance coverage for Pete. It also funds awareness and the fight for a cure for the disease. Bids for the jersey start at $100 and will run from March 3rd until March 17th on the Boston College athletics website.
Pete came to national prominence with this past summer's Ice Bucket Challenge. He was recently hospitalized but continues his brave fight against the insidious disease.
